Is this normal or is she behind?

DD is going to be five next month and is in preschool. She does great when counting things. I'll put a work sheet in front of her and she'll count the snowballs, animals, whatever and writes the number on the slot. Great. But, she just can't seem to count very well. If I ask her to count to ten she always gets 7,8,9 mixed up. She also has a problem recognizing 6,7,8,9 as well. She mixes them up. Counting to twenty is a mess. She gets to 11 and it's all messed up after that. Is this normal for her age? Once she gets to twenty she skips to 22 and counts from there messing up a couple time. On the other hand, she's doing great at phonics and writing.

It is quite normal for them to mix up numbers, especially the 6 and the 9. She might not be that interested in counting and numbers right now. Just keep practising by playing games and doing fun things with numbers. It will come.

She's not interested. She's much more interested in writing and drawling.

I would say that she is completely normal. She is not even K age yet. Here is a good list of what she would be expected to do at the END of K which isn't for another 18 months. The fact she can write and identify most of the primary numbers makes her ahead of the game going into K.

Thanks for the link! I don't know why I get into such a huff about this. DS is just learning to write numbers now and he's in Kindergarten. I think it's all because the pedi said a five year old should know how to count to 50. I'm thinking more like a 5yr old that's in Kinder not preschool!
