Is this normal at their age?

My twins are six weeks old. They wake up, eat, and then stay awake for no more than an hour. They may then sleep for two hours (sometimes more, rarely less). Of course it's rare that they do this at the same time (like they are now). Just wondering if at six weeks this is to much day time sleep. Should u try to keep them awake longer? Would that help with nights. They do fine (4-5 hour stretches) but they tend to stay awake for an hour after eating then too. I don't turn on lights, don't talk to them, and unless really needed don't change them. May if I kept then awake mire during the day, they wouldn't do this at night.

I think that is very normal at that age. And getting 4-5 hours at a stretch at night is better than most babies do at that age. Don't forget to adjust their age when taking into account what they are doing now--a 6 week old 35 weeker is in a much different phase than a 6 week old 40 weeker. I think give it some time--if they have already gotten into a 4-5 stretch at night, hopefully they will either do 2 of those long stretches or sleep one longer stretch pretty soon. Hang in there!

I don't do the adjusted age because they were 38 weeks and quite big (7.5 lbs and 6.10 lbs). I figure that they were pretty much full term and honestly would hate to think of how much thy would have weighed had I gone to 40 weeks! Thank you for the reply. It makes me feel better knowing that you think it is pretty normal. I know it gets better and it all takes time. It already has gotten better since week one! Things are just hard and so different with the twins compaired with the first year with my one year old daughter. Many advice and encouragement is apreciated!!

I think they are doing exactly what they should be doing and your getting 4-5hr night stretches, that sounds pretty good for 6 weeks! I think if you would try and push them to stay awake longer you would have 2 cranky babies on your hands, keep up the good work mama!

I think they-and you-are doing wonderfully! No more than an hour wake time sounds about right. As they get a bit older, it will stretch to 90 minutes or so. But 60 minutes is about all they can handle now. And 4-5 hour stretches at night-I'm jealous! Sounds like everyone is doing well!
