Is this colic?

Two nights ago Lily started crying around 6pm out of the blue and it lasted for about an hour. She wasn't wet or hungry and she woke up from a nap each time. Well tonight at 5pm she started crying after waking up from a nap and didn't stop for 4 hours. We tried changing her diaper, feeding her when it was time, swaddling, rocking, the swing, the vibrating bouncy seat, a bath, and finally letting her cry in her crib. This was 4 hours of hysterical crying, not just the occasional wimper cry.

DH and I are exhausted and our nerves are shot. After checking my reference books, Baby 411 and What to Expect the First Year, I am thinking the is the beginning of colic. DH thinks it is a fluke that it was around the same time as the previous days and is convinced that since his mom and sister babysat this afternoon that they must have done something to cause the crying. I say he is wrong, what could they have done. What do you guys think? Am I right to think this might be the start of colic?

How is she feeding? I ask because my son was about a month old when we figured out he had reflux and he would cry from the pain of the acid coming back up into his throat :( Perhaps if it isn't colic, that might be a cause of the crying?

From the mommy of a colic baby---- I would say "yes".

The one way to know for sure is if it keeps happening. I am also fortunate enough to have one w/ silent reflux and regular reflux. The way to know if it is REFLUX and not COLIC (for US anyway) is if the feeding is difficult 80% of the time. Colic for us was NOT necessarily AT feeding time.. It was sporadic and MOSTLY at nite like you are describing. It was an edgy baby who got MUCH worse beginning at 3:30 in the afternoon.. "Witching Hour" and it lasted til 6:00 pm EVERY SINGLE NITE until they turned 14 weeks ADJUSTED-- and colic disappeared!

Best of luck :) The only thing that helped Nicolas was the VIBRATING bouncy seat on the counter by the LOUD exhaust fan. It was really horrible. Bad enough to make me say "NO MORE BABIES for us!"

White noise- Vacuum Cleaner and vibration. That's all you can do :)

Did she get overstimulated with your MIL and SIL? I know when my girls were that small, just having new people around let to cranky babies because they were so overstimulated they couldn't settle down. Plus you are entering the fussy period when babies "wake up" and are starting to be more aware of their surroundings, but their nervous system is still too immature to process everything.

Things that helped us was swaddling and shushing. White noise would work too.

Other things that could have been making her cry are gas (did your MIL and SIL burp her well during the day?) or reflux.

:hug99: I hope this afternoon is better for you.

It sounds like colic to me-this is when it started for us, they would cry nonstop from around 6pm-10pm every night and it lasted for several weeks. We would turn on the vaccum cleaner and that would make them stop or at least drown out the noise so we could make it through dinner.
I am sorry this is happening to you, there is nothing you can do so try not to get to frustrated and just know that it doesnt last forever. Try and get help and take breaks because it can really wear on you!

It's sounds like the start of colic. Colic is generally peaking at about 6 weeks. Were they early? You'll know if it lasts. One of ours started this in week 5 and it lasted until week 14...one week short of me jumping off the talest building I could find.

In reality, it can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks/months. You'll develop coping skills if it continues and things will be ok. My colic baby is a sweet happy girl now. I'm sorry you even had to deal with for a few days.

GREAT suggestion. I had one that I thought was colicy (for weeks she cried every night til 2am), but Dr. said no, that we should just swaddle her. Someone on this board gave me the idea of putting her in a vibrating bouncy seat near noise. So, she got the bathroom because that is where the loudest fan was. She would start crying around 8Pm and I would give her until 10pm to stop. At 10pm I strapper her in the seat, loved on her, then put her in the bathroom with the fa and shut the door. It took a couple nights, but it started working. It is the only thing that saved my sanity. To this day, that is still how she goes to sleep. She LOVES it!!!! (the next Dr. I saw said she had colic)

Both of our twins had colic and it was just terrible. I would say yes, too...we tried everything and eventually switched to Alimentum formula and Dr. Brown's bottles (not a problem if you BF). This seriously cut down on the amount of gas floating around in their little tummies. Call it coincidence, colic, cow's milk protein allergy, gas, whatever....it's nerve grinding with 2! With the formula switch it ceased the very next feeding. Prior to the switch the only thing that would calm them down was starting up the vaccuum and leaving it run in the same room with them. They really loved that...worth a try!
Sending lots of hugs and prayers for sleep!

Our Dr. also said no colic...he said babies cry. Yes, they do, but this was totally different. As a mother, you know when something isn't right! It went on for 2 weeks and I finally asked about the formula...he told us we could try it and BOOM! fixed. I also found that my babies were super sensitive to any kind of powdered formula. No matter how I prepared or mixed it, it just didn't agree with them.. Just a thought
