Is there a trick to staying dry for nap?

After Amy had been in underwear for a couple of weeks, her teacher decided it was time to get rid of the naptime diaper, so we ditched it at home as well. At school, she has an accident during/after nap maybe half the time -- at home it is nearly every weekend day.

She does go potty right before nap, but I think she just pees in her sleep. Even yesterday, she did a HUGE pee & poop right before nap, and was all proud that her loveys & blankie were dry when she woke up -- but her pants and undies were wet.

It's become part of the routine -- get her out of bed, strip off wet clothes and sleep sack, and throw all her loveys in the washer so they will be dry by bedtime. (Thank goodness she naps in a PNP, at least -- much easier to change.)

The accidents do not seem to bother her that much -- if she were really traumatized by them, I would put the diaper back on. (I'd also put it back on if the pee was waking her up earlier than usual, but she sleeps right through it.) It's more just that it shows no sign of getting better. Do I just wait it out, or are there some strategies I could try?

I dont really have any advice...if she is using the bathroom right before nap time, I dont know what else you might try. Im assuming she is still wearing a diaper/pullup for overnight sleep..? It does take longer to train for sleep times. I know my almost 4 yr old DD wore a pullup at night time almost until 3, even though she was day trained by about 2 1/2. If you dont mind washing the stuff with every accident, I would keep her in underwear just as to not regress or discourage her. That might make her feel like it is ok to have accidents while shes sleeping, or she might not feel like such a big girl anymore.

All children are different, so just keep encouraging her to go before naps and bedtime, and see how things go.

Also, if she doesnt usually fall asleep very soon after laying down, I would have her go potty again...I'd say if shes still awake after 15-20 minutes.

I might cut down on the amount of liquid and use the bathroom more frequently. But other than that I don't know what else you can do. :( Can you put down a bed mat on her sheets so you can keep yourself from changing the sheets so often? They sell them at BRU. I wish I had better advice Alden.

My b/g twins been p/t for about 1yr and are finally staying dry for nap most days. Still wearing pull ups at night cuz they wake up wet most nights. I was wondering if there is a trick for this also.

Am I the only one who has a problem with the teacher deciding it's time to ditch the naptime diaper? That's not HER decision - it's yours. If your daughter is not yet ready for naptime undies, insist that the teacher use the diaper/pullup until she is. Your daughter should not be put in the position of having a potentially embarrassing accident so sooner in her potty-trained life, imo.

I can't think of anything you could do differently, honestly. My girls still used a pullup for naps for some time after being PT'd. I think it's fairly normal. After all, it took them alot of work to get to the point where they know it's about to happen while they are AWAKE, I don't think it's uncommon for them not to be aware enough while they are asleep to stop it from happening.

Jennie, thank you for saying this. It really hadn't occurred to me to question it! I still think the teacher can do what she wants at school (assuming Amy doesn't seem to mind, which she doesn't). I think it's easier for her to stay dry at school because her naps are not as long.

But I've started asking her at home if she wants to wear a diaper for nap. This past weekend, she chose to wear a diaper 3 times (and one time she explicitly said "So I don't have an accident in my bed and we don't have to wash all my things"). The last day, she chose to wear undies and she did have a tiny accident, but didn't seem upset about it.
