I'm not sure if there is already a group but I have also been diagnosed with GD. I would love to chat with others that are doing the diet as well.

I don't have any specific questions just yet, I haven't even been to my teaching. That's this coming Wednesday. I just wanted to get an idea of people in here that are in the same place as I am. I guess so that if questions come up, I'll know what to expect.
    Thanks so much.

I have my class on Tuesday. We should compare notes when you are done on Wednesday.
Maybe we could just keep going on this thread.

Do you know if you will be controlling it with diet alone?

I have recently been diagnosed also. I already met with the dietician and nurse for instruction, but haven't met with my peri about it (we meet on Tuesday). I've been tracking my numbers and when I talked to my regular OB about it last week, she said be prepared for insulin. I don't know if she suspects that due to my results or what but either way I just want to get it under control so that I know the babies will be okay when they are born.

I had GD with my daughter but passed the tests, so she had a lot of problems with her related to the GD when she was born. I'd be more than happy to talk to you about it anytime - especially since it's all new to me too. It's a bit overwhelming at first...

I was GD with my DS who is 4 now, and I was on glucophage prior to getting pg...but never diagnosed diabetic. I am now on 10mg of glyburide that I take half in the morning and the other half in the evening...I know when I was diagnosed with my son I was really upset with myself and scared, but it ended up helping become more healthy for us both...I actually went into have him at -5lb pre-pregnancy wt and he weighed 7lb 5 oz. I am going on 31 weeks with the twins and I have lost 11lbs, but will find out actual wts this Friday, but I am guessing they are both 4lbs ea already. At my 28 week they were A 3lb4oz, and B 3lb9oz and the drs were very happy with this.

With doing the diet it can be hard to eat all they ask especially the further along you get due to running out of room to put food...but at least attempt to eat something for 3 snacks and 3 meals. Also testing yourself can get annoying and keeping on top of it, but in the end it is all worth it. I am no pro at it and I do have my weaknesses, and see it in my sugars, but don't over do it. If you like to ask anything please ask away here, I think these ladies will be of great help to you and I don't mind either...Just remember that the Dr's are going to tell you the worst case scenarios and scare you, but you will be amazed how well you can change your eating habits for those two little miracles...Good luck and looking forward to this thread to continue...

I normally take glucophage for PCOS but have probably been diabetic for a few years now. I probably had undiagnosed GD with my last pregnancy based on my sons blood sugars after birth. I began insulin at nine weeks this pregnancy. We found the elevated blood sugars by chance. I started on an insulin pump about a month later. I would love to participate in the discussion. Although I will confess, with the pump I no longer have to follow a "diet'", just carb counting so I don't have as much advice there. I'd be happy to answer any questions if I can help. :)

Thanks so much for all the replies and info.
I have to say, I'm a nurse and my specialty is renal disease. And probably 95% of the people I work with as patients are Diabetics and their condition has made them have many, many problems.
I can carb count with the best of them, but for me it's different. I am a little over 28 weeks and have only gained 23lbs. My doc told me I needed to gain 45-50 pounds. I doubt I'm gonna gain the rest in the next 2 months (considering probably that I won't carry full term). So I've been checking my sugars since I found out, just so I know where I'm at, but I've already lost weight recently (the past 2 checkups) and I don't want to lose anymore. Does anyone remember what amount of calories they were on? Like 2200 or 2500?
The teachers told me on the phone that I will start on diet control first, but that it's up to the MD to determine if I'll be on insulin. I was told on Friday on the phone, so I haven't seen my OB yet.
I guess I just want the perspective of everyone else. Sounding boards, I suppose. Clinically, I can help almost anyone with diabetes. But this is different, this is about these two little ones inside. And I don't want to screw it up.

Ok, obsessing I know. Might be a little hormonal, you think?

I'm actually a Type 1 Diabetic so I can't be of much assistance for those of you who are GD, but I did want to let you know there's a GREAT website out there called http://www.diabeticmommy.com/ - it covers it all - T1, T2 and GD. The ladies are really nice and willing to answer any questions you may have. I must admit it's been a lifesaver so far.

    Best of luck!

Haven't been back on here for a while and wanted to bump this topic back to the front. I am currently being controlled by diet, but in my teaching I took my logbook (I started to test early) and she said I would be on insulin very quickly. Especially since I still have a while to go. My doc set me up for the endocrinologist to get me in the system, he said my numbers aren't too bad. But since he expects me to go another month to 6 weeks, he wants me to have already seen the doc and then if I need it quickly I can start it.

PJ-just wondering how your testing went and what they told you? And of course anyone else who's just been diagnosed.

Sorry to hear you might have to go on insulin.

Mine is also being controlled by diet right now and there hasn't been any talk of insulin.
It is definitely a learning curve as to what makes my sugars go high but so far it's not too bad.
I had a couple days of frustration and I wasn't eating enough. Now I think I *mostly* have it figured out but of course some things are still throwing me for a loop.

I mentioned in my PM to you about ketones. I am checking them everyday and was told I need to eat a better night time snack with more carbs in it as my ketones are getting high or maybe that I need more carbs during the day? So I am experimenting with a higher carb night time snack.

    PJ,
when you went for your teaching, didn't they tell you exactly how many carbs to eat w/each snack/meal? If so, when you called back did they tell you exactly what/how much to elevate it?
Just wondering. When my ketones didn't come down, they increased my carb allowance at bedtime an extra 15 grams.

Yes, they did tell me how much carbs to eat but if I eat that many carbs my #'s are too high.
It's like I can't balance my carbs and my ketones together. If I eat all the carbs allowed my ketones are good but my blood sugars are high. If I eat a lower amount of carbs my blood sugars are fine but then I have ketones.
    So frustrating!

My teachers told me that it's more important for you to get all your carbs for the day. The ketones in the blood are bad for the babies, so if that means your sugars are high; then they need to address it. They told me to eat all the carbs they prescibe and then if the diet doesn't control you, a med is next on the list.

I know from my nursing standpoint, that ketones are acidic and can really mess up your balance. The "diabetic coma" that people tell you about is called diabetic ketoacidosis. And that's how it starts, your body starts burning fat and the by products produce the ketones. I just wondered what they had told you, since you hadn't seen the dietician yet.

You know, I see the endocrinologist this week. I'm gonna ask, in relation to ketones and high BS's which is harder for the babies. I know for normal people, but this gestational stuff is different.

Sorry I should have clarified. I did see a dietician, actually I have twice already. She said I needed to eat more carbs as my ketones were too high. Of course when I eat that amount of carbs my #'s go high....who knows.
I have to check my ketones by my morning urine...my monitor does not check my ketones.
