is there a bumbo controversy?

I posted asking how many bumbos people have and from the responses I got the feeling that some are against it or have not found it useful. Is there a controversy here? Is it possible there is a downside to them?
I'm thinking of getting some especially to help them progress with their sitting. Are there reasons why I shouldn't?

It seems that people either like it and found it useful, or never found it useful, or dont like it due to what Professional Therapists have talked to them about. So you may be right; a slight controversy here!

What my sons PT said was that they were designed for children with physical disabilities and then the general public got a hold of it and it took off from there. However, she said the negative was they dont allow for the baby to use their abdominal or trunk muscles while they are sitting in there and they are just kind of hunched over.

With that being said, if you use it on a small occasion, I dont see how it can do harm. (But then if you barely use it, personally, I dont know if you really need it!)

I spoke with my pedi about the bumbo... just watch the babies for fatigue. We love the bumbos here, its the only way I can get dinner ready!

In my opinion, it's just like everything else, don't leave them in it 24/7, and it's fine. [IMG] I don't really think that it teaches them to sit up, they learn that on their own. I use my bumbos a lot for feeding them, they are easy to clean up!

I think for the very short stretches of time that they will actually tolerate ANYTHING at that age...it can't do harm.

My girls HATE their bumbos. They are very tight and confining in my opinion. I do not recommend getting them....or the Bebe Pods.

I am a pediatric PT and I absolutely LOVE the bumbo seats, as both a mom and a PT. Yes, they were made for kids with disabilities, but I think they can be great for average kids as well. I know for myself, it's so much easier to just sit one of the girls in a bumbo and not have to worry about straps when I'm running to get the other twin or take their older brother to the potty. The bumbo seats have also given the girls a new perspective on the world. They can see & interact with their brother at his level, which is wonderful! They interact with each other while they are both seated in their bumbo seats. The seats also get them off of their backs, which is so important.

As with all other infant equipment, too much use would be a bad thing. Babies need lots and lots of floor time--on their tummies, on their back, sitting, ... But as busy parents, we often need to have the babies in a stationary position and bumbo seats can really help us interact with our babies while we're getting chores done in the house. My girls just love to sit on the kitchen floor while I cook or empty the dishwasher, because I will talk to them and play with them the entire time. I also like them because they are so portable--it's really easy to take one with me places where there is no infant equipment.

So, to answer your other thread...If you aren't sure if you'll use it, maybe just get one. Then if you are using it a lot and want one for the other baby, get it then. Good luck! [IMG]

I guess there is a controversy! I never knew that!

I like my Bumbos, they are great for short stretches of time. But like anything there are pros and cons, and you have to take the babies preferences into account.

I was going to get them but now I just use a laundry basket...I prop a pillow in one corner (lined with a towel) and sit them up and put a few toys in. It has helped DD as she now leans forward for the toys. I think it's a personal preference...if I were to get them I would get only one. I would hate to get two of them and have neither baby like it!

While I had them I thought they were great. However, for my babies the window of use was very short for the price.
We could have bought them sooner but started at 5 months and by 7 months DS could easily get out.
Luckily, when I sold them I got almost all of my money back.

I think they are a great idea and a good way to integrate babies into family time. DD could have used hers longer then the 2 months DS did.

EXCELLENT For short spans of time. I love them and my kiddos started sitting in them at 4.5 months. They are now sitting up on their own. So if you are going to get one, do it soon! I borrowed one and bought one second hand.
I love having them sit in it while I cook or clean in the kitchen, they are so interested in what I am doing!

We use them under our Einstein gym and the little ones seem to enjoy it. I agree that like with everything else at this stage, they don't last long on them. However, sitting in them under the gym gives them a different perspective of the toys that dangle. I also use it for a quick place to put one. Especially since I put DS in the corner of the chair last week to move DD from the swing to the exersaucer (about 7 feet apart) and DS rolled out of the chair and onto the floor. BAD MOMMY!

I'm glad I only ever bought one...my kids HATED it!!! it was ok for my son for short stretches of time (like enough time for me to shower) and it was easier to drag to the bathroom than the bouncy seat...

I really need to get mine up on Ebay!

The girls hated the bumbo. They also started to get out of them on their own so we haven't used ours. Luckily I borrowed it though so we are no worse for the wear.

I think there are pros and cons. The price is a con for the amt of time you can put them in them safely. My personal pro...neither of my girls had good muscle tone and the pedi was especially worried about Maddie..I started putting them in their bumbos and it forced her, in my opinion, to strengthen her neck muscles. She would start to teeter to one side and I would watch her pull herself back up into a sitting position. Before I knew it she was sitting in it like a pro and her pedi was thrilled with her improvement. I also used them in the bathtub (yeah I know they say not to) and it worked great for us. It just depends on what your expectations are on whether or not it's a good product.

I loved the concept of the bumbos, however, my boys did not. I have a pic of them in their seats at like 4m and tried them quite a few times but they never took to them. I think it is all up to if the babies like them or not.

There is controversy over every infant thing it seems...Ive heard people say not to let your babies swing because it takes their breath away, Ive heard the bumbos are bad, Ive heard to not use a jumperoo, it goes on and on. I think all these are wonderful devices just as long as your children arent left in them all day every day. My girls PT and OT LOVED the bumbo and bebe pod, so did my sons EI.

(btw I will send you an email tomorrow, dont have time for the pic right now, its bedtime)
