Is sneezing a sign that they have a cold?

Im wondering as they have sneezed right from day one but maybe a few sneezes a day, now sometimes they sneeze three times in a row, is it a cold? Too much dust? Too dry the air (i need a humidifier)?

No runny noses although Ashley had a little snot in her nose over the New Year...

    Thanks in advance!

I dont' know, but mine sneeze a lot too! I know at first the dr. said they were still trying to clear amniotic (sp?) fluid from their lungs....but mine still sneeze and we haven't had any colds.

Mine sneezed a lot the first few months and my pedi said now that it is a reflex present in all newborns. This is how they clear their nasal passages of congestion and airborne particles and may not necessarily mean they are sick. Sneezing also helps reopen a temporarily closed nostril. For example, after feeding their nose might be flattened or one nostril pushed shut. The baby will sneeze to open their nose again.

I was also told that now that the amniotic fluid is out of their noses, they aren't used to the hair in their nostils and it tickles and makes them sneeze!

To know the difference between normal reflexes and a cold, I look for additional symptions like increased mucus or change in color, congestion, difficulty breathing and/or a fever.

Mine also sneezed a lot in the beginning. Still do, actually. But, what I did want to say was that a humidifier is a good thing to have, even when they aren't sick. Our dr told us they would be much less likely to get sick if we had one going every night. I know my husband always feels better when we have one going in our room.

So funny that you would ask this... I went to visit C&C today and they were both sneezing alot! Steph and I were asking each other if we thought they might have a cold... well it has been FREEZING in Houston this week which is VERY unusual!

I've got two sneezers here! It's not as bad as it used to be, but still 1-5 sneezes each day. DH gets bloody noses in the winter, so we installed a humidifier onto the furnace. It works through the whole house and we don't have to refill it. It may be helping the babies, too. [IMG]
