Is she ready already?

One of my girls has been telling me before she pees or poops. She'll walk over to me and point to her diaper and say "pee-pee" or "poopy" before she goes, and then if it's poopy, she'll walk away and squat down and poop, and then come back and point to her diaper again and say "poopy." She's also been waking up from her afternoon nap with a completely dry diaper. Could she be ready to use the potty? She's only 20 months. Anyone try potty training this early? I haven't done anything with her yet - we don't even own a training potty. Maybe I should buy one and just see what she does with it?

I know that my DD started doing this when she was 24 mos old. I started putting her on the potty, and she would go for a couple of days. After a day or two, the novelty wore off. She started throwing herself on the floor screaming "no" whenever I mentioned going to the potty. I backed off until she was 2 1/2, and I made another attempt. Same response after a couple of days. Now she is 3, and it is off and on with her. I think the only thing that keeps her going on the potty is her twin brother is now day trained and wearing underwear. She sees him getting rewards, and she stays interested because of competition.

By her telling you she has pooped or peed shows that she is in touch with her bowel movements which is a good sign. If I were you, I would buy a potty seat and a small potty chair. I would keep the seat in the bathroom and put the potty chair in the living room or wherever she spends most of her time. You could show her on the big potty, and put her on the seat when she says she needs to pee. If she goes, giver he an M&M or sticker with a lot of praise.Just a suggestion.

Good luck, potty training can be frustrating but just know that they WILL get it after awhile.

My dd is only 18 mos, but she's been doing the same thing. She doesn't tell me every time, but whenever she says "potty" I'll let her sit on her little seat & about 60% of the time she goes. Then we make a big fuss over what a big girl she is, flush it down the big potty & wave "bye bye". She's actually been doing pretty good! But we're not pushing it or anything.....I just did like what you said, bought a potty chair & saw what she did. Some days she's really into it & others not so much. But I figured, if she's asking for it I'm not gonna say no!

My best friend has twin girls that were completely potty trained by 2 years. So, I am sure it can be done. I will begin potty training on my Christmas Break, about two weeks before their 2nd b-day. I am going to buy chairs over the Thanksgiving Holidays. We have been really talking about pee-pee and poopy diapers. I don't know if they are ready yet for sure, but I am going to start introducing them to the potty and take a whirl at it here in a couple of weeks. Good luck to you!

My boys are 18 months, and like naomi02's dd, one of them has been coming to me to announce when he's going to poop. All of the grandchildren on my side of the family have been very difficult to potty train (very few managed before turning 4), so I won't get my hopes up, but I suppose I should buy a potty just in case ds is ready.

My girls are 20 months and Sy tells me when she has to go. It's not consistent, but I'll set her on the training potty we have and sometimes she goes, sometimes not, but we always make a big deal when she goes too.
I thought it was too soon too, but if she's making the effort to tell me, then I guess maybe it's not.
