Is it time to give up the video monitor?

Our girls are in separate rooms, and we have video monitors on each of them. The problem is, ever since the girls have been able to stand up in their cribs we have had to put the cameras out a few feet away from the cribs, and you can't really see what is going on in the cribs. One of my girls now has a crib tent so you can see nothing at all in her crib. We can still hear what is going on through the monitors. However, I am not sure if we really need to hear every little thing on the monitor. I can hear when they are up and babbling or crying. I still check on them when they go to sleep. So ... is it time to put away the monitors? It would be nice to have one less thing plugged in. They could be a safety hazard if one of my girls gets a hold of a cord or whatever. Then again, I guess there is that "you never know" factor.

I never used a video monitor and I only used the sound ones with my girls (never bothered to get it out with my son), I figure I can hear them so I don't need it. If you don't think you need it then put it away for a week and if you still feel ok about putting it away then don't take it back out but if you feel you need it longer for that piece of mind then take it back out. I just make sure that there is nothing in my sons crib that he can get hurt himself on and then I just listen if he cries. He also has a crib tent now too since he can easily climb out so that is one safety thing that I don't have to worry about. Everyone is different as I never used the video and only used the sound monitor for a little bit, others use them longer.

I am not even close to being done. But I agree with Becky. Try it and see how it goes. If you feel you still need it, you can always set it up again.

we never had a video monitor and I used (and still use) the sound one - they are not out of cribs yet and I keep their door shut (and mine) and since they're not old enough to come get me if they need me I still use the monitor and will continue...now I keep it on voice activated so there is no sound coming from it unless they cry out or babble so its all good...

I, too, used the video monitors until they were able to pull to stand and yank it down. I've turned off the video part of the monitor and can still hear them. They rarely wake up during the night, but I'm not even close to turning the sound monitors off, I'm thinking when they can safely walk down stairs to my room alone...or by the time they get to college.

we never had the monitor ones, but wish we did...i would probably have just stayed up and watched them. now, i would love to see what dd is up to (she is in the crib behind the door, so can never see why ds is laughing so much!)

we put the sound monitor away when they turned one. their room is right next to ours, so we can hear if something is up. i check them before i go to bed and any time i get up in the night.

i agree w/ pp, put it away for a couple of nights and see how it goes.

We still have the cameras up but for the last few days we haven't looked at the handheld. We don't even know where it is. (oops) So maybe we're heading into that direction. I can't believe we may be monitorless.
