I have enough formula right now to get the girls to the end of the month. They'll be one on February 17th. Do you think it's okay to switch two weeks early?

Yes! We started introducing whole milk (up to 6 oz. per day) at 11 months. I was breastfeeding, but they would only nurse 2-3 times a day, so the pedi gave the go ahead to add some whole milk. HTH [IMG]

I don't see a problem with it if they haven't had any milk issues and if their formula was milk based then I would slowly start to introduce. We were on whole milk by 11 1/2 months and they loved it. The only problem I had was the coldness of the milk, so I would warm it just a little and each time got less and less. But they stopped taking formula after I introduced the milk....I can't imagine why? :) hehe.

    Take care!

Our ped told us to switch at 11 1/2 months, and we did it cold turkey.

I wouldn't think there would be a problem. With my oldest we were actually able to start it at 9 months, that is when our pedi. usually does it, but since the twins were preemies he wanted to wait until 12 months. I am going to ask at our next RSV shot which is 2 weeks before their 12 month appt. if I can start introducing it. Even if they say to wait the 2 weeks, I'll probably go ahead anyway. [IMG]

Your girls will do great I'm sure since they have dropped some bottles, I'm so envious!!!

Sara, I really think it's fine!! I know Jamie (kysweetheart) switched around 11 mos. and a few others did it early too. If you don't have issues with them being extra small or anything I can't imagine it's a problem.

This is so interesting. Is it really OK??? I would love to get that formula monkey off my back. Did you guys mix half and half at first or just do it straight?

I started giving them a little bit of milk in their sippy cups about a month ago, thinking that it might take them a while to get used to the different taste. But they really liked it right away! I ran out of the small jug of whole milk I bought, so I've just been giving them formula for the last week or two.

FYI, I just found this statement:
Cow's milk is more specific to a baby cow than a baby human. Cow's milk formula is based on cow's milk but has been engineered to be closer to human milk (still a ways off, but closer). Many infants still have problems with cow's milk formula (allergies, GI problems, etc.). Babies who are exposed to cow's milk before their first birthday are more likely to be anemic, have diarrhea or vomiting, and/or experience an allergic reaction (the proteins in milk are more numerous than those in other milk products, such as the yogurt). The excessive protein load in cow's milk can also overload a baby's kidneys. It is deficient in vitamins C, E, and copper. It is harder to digest as well, often causing intestinal blood loss. A number of studies have also indicated that early introduction of cow's milk may contribute to the development of Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus.

    It's on this page:

I will still ask the ped about it, since the twins go in next week. But I thought this might be useful information. Most of the concerns cites (like diahrrea and vomiting) seem like something common sense to monitor. You'll know if your baby is reacting poorly. I was concerned about the note on it increasing the risk of diabetes. Does anyone know more on that subject?
