Is it normal to have an internal sono and vaginal check every visit to a high risk ob? I have been seeing him every 2 weeks since I was 19 weeks. He tells me that I am effacing and I have a short cervix and I am contracting... He put me on bed rest cause of all this and it just seems odd to me

Can't the effacing be helped along because of the internals?

Once you start to efface and that go backwards? example...can you go from being 40% effaced to 30%

And does anyone know what is considered a "short cervix" I am going to ask him what I am measuring at on Sat when I go.

    Thanks for the help!

I don't know anything about effacing, but I had an internal at every u/s appointment. They keep an extra close eye on the cervix as it is a good indicator of pre term labor. You may want to voice your concerns to the Dr. though. I know towards the end, I had one every week.

Starting at 17w, my peri measured my cervix via u/s at every visit.

I have been having an internal sonogram every 3 weeks since 16 weeks and I'm about to go to weekly. It's standard practice to measure the cervix at each one to look for signs of premature labor. The u/s shouldn't have any effect on you.

I had a T/V U/S every visit with the peri, but no vaginal checks.

As far as effacing, yes it can reverse. I was 5 at 26 weeks, 2.5 at 28 weeks, and 4 at 29 weeks, after 1 week of bedrest. I stayed put the rest of the pregnancy.

A short cervix according to my peri was 2.5 or less.

I needed to have internals every week also to check my cervical length. I was checked twice a week by the MFM and my regular ob. The effacing is not what they are looking for they are watching to see how short your cervix gets. A regular cervix length is supposed to be 4.5-5cm. I changed every week till I was below .6cm. Since you are still early I am suprised they didn't staple your cervix closed. I think when I hit below 1cm I was placed on additional meds to stop contractions. .

I had the same issue at 17 wks. what they did is give me a reg. ultrasound every wk and a cervical one everyother time. Ask them if your worried about it.
