Is 4oz too much?

My twin boys are four weeks old and are already housing 4oz bottles every four hours. Did anyone else have little ones eating this much so early on? We wake them to eat during the day (if they aren't awake already), but allow them to sleep for as long as they want at night. They will usually sleep anywhere from 4-6 hours straight at night.

I worry that they are eating too much, but they don't spit up very often and when they do it is just a bit. My twins were big at birth. Gabriel Charles was 6lbs 2oz and Landon Reed was 6lbs 14oz. So I think that might have something to do with their big appetites.

Anyone else experience the same eating habits?

If they aren't spitting up then it sounds fine to me! Mine didn't eat that much that early on, but they were small and born a little early so I can't compare with your situation. Also at 4 weeks they couldn't go more than 3 hours so if you can do fewer, but bigger bottles it sounds like they are fine!

I think that babies take what they need. It sounds like they are eating the right amount. It's good that they sleep 4-6 hours straight at night at 4 weeks old!!!

Oh my.. I'm glad you bring up that issue. That's exactly what I was wondering myself!!

My girls have been both eating 4 oz since they were 2 wks old!! They are now 10 lbs each. They don't go every 4 hrs though. Sometimes at night they'll go four hours, but mostly during the day it's between 1.5 hrs - 3 hrs [usually every 2]. They both finish their bottles gracefully [sometimes without dribbling!!]

My boys are almost 3 weeks old and have been taking 4 oz for almost a week now. They're growing like WEEDS! It's crazy!

I think mine ate 4 oz every 3 hours at that age, which at the time I though was too much too. The doctor assured me as long as they were taking it and not projectile vomiting it after eating, they were fine. My son was also up to 10 lbs at 4 weeks. But they weren't sleeping 4-6 hours at night, and a 4 hour schedule during the day would have been nice at that time too, so it sounds like you're doing really well!

As far as the weight too, I was told that they grow how they're going to grow (genetically related), and it doesn't have to do with "overfeeding", because you really can't overfeed. The baby won't take it or they'll spit it up.

That's awesome that your girlies have gained well. Are they formula fed? I'm anxious to see how much weight my little men have gained since birth. I breast fed my first born, but decided to formula feed the twins. I'm assuming that they'll put on weight much quicker than my oldest Liam did. Two more weeks until weigh in!!!

Question for you... are you co-bedding your girls or are they sleeping separately?

I tried to bf for the first 3 wks. I'd usually pump and give them half breast milk in their bottles. Then they started eating more and more and I found it difficult to keep up with the little boogers :p

We keep them separate. We tried at first to keep them together, but no one was sleeping that way, lol. Instead we currently have them in separate cradles [about 2-3 ft away from eachother]. They don't really care for one another just yet.

my lil guys were drinking a 4 oz after about 2 weekes old. They would usually go about 1 1/2 hours to 3. On average about 2. they really didn't start taking regualnaps until about 6 weeks old. And Started sleeping through the nite after their 1st round of shots at 2 mo. Now at 7 mo. the usually have about 5 bottles aday at 6-8 oz. They have grown so much! NOw they are 18 lbs. each. So hard to carry them around at the same time, but I still do it. I think as long as they are happy, not rejecting what you give them and are stating to sleep more regulaly. Then yo uare doing the right thing for them! Congrats on your babies.

That gives me something to look forward to :) My girls turned 6 wks on Monday. They started taking naps last week. Although, they had a difficult time realizing they needed to nap. They'd be awake for four hrs straight and be consistantly fussy! Nothing would please them. That's when I realized the trend. Now we're SORTA on a schedule.. They'll wake up for the day [around 0600-0800] and stay awake for a few hours, then they'll nap [until around 1600-1800] and then stay awake for a couple hrs before bedtime.

Currently, I go through 6-8 bottles every night. Ddepending on how long they sleep during the first stretch [which is usually 3 hrs]. Every wake up afterwards is almost always at the 2 hr mark.
