So 5 or 6 days ago we started the 25% whole milk and 75% formula bottles to transition to 100% milk my their first birthday. We had no initial problems, then 3 days ago Max & Lily got colds again (they had them 2 weeks ago) and then yesterday Max was tugging at his ears and crying/whining for 3 hours. I took him into the doctor and it is a double ear infection with a severe red throat / cold. They gave him a RX for amoxicillin. So we notice this morning and at lunch he has a red neck, chin, and red patches around his mouth 10 minutes after his bottle. I call the ped. and am told that due to all that he has going on right now he had more than likely developed a temporary allergy to the milk. They told me to stop the milk for two weeks until the RX is finished. The thing that gets me is the RX instructions say it can be given with milk or formula.

Having babies seems to be a daily learning experience. I never knew you could get a temperary allergy to milk. Anyone experience this?

I've never heard of that either. Has he had amoxicillin before?? My dd had a reaction to her amox when she was about 10 months old, covered in big red blotchy hives from head to toe, and it was about 3 days after she finished the whole prescription off! I don't know how long it might take for a reaction from the amox but I wonder if that's what it's from??

I hope he feels better soon, and let me tell you, even with baby #3 and #4, it's still a daily learning experience!!

Yes, this is his second ear infection and his second RX for amox. The only difference is that it is pink this time instead of orange. The pharmacy told me that is just the flavoring they put in it for the kids.

I definately think Max is going to be our sick boy growing up. He had open-heart surgery at 8 weeks old, 2 ear infections, and 4 colds now and he isn't a year old yet <_< . I just feel bad for the little guy, he give you these sad puppy dog eyes when he doesn't feel good.

Is the doc sure that it isnt a reaction to the amoxycillin!? It seems odd that it would be the milk if he´s had it before and been OK.I´d keep an eye on that. Hope he gets better asap.

Guess what, now Max is allergic to the amoxicillin they prescribed for the double ear infection. He broke out in hives all over his legs and chest 10 minutes after his 3rd dose this evening. The on call doctor had us give him 1/2 tsp. of Benedryl every 4 to 6 hours and then tomorrow they will reassess him and prescribe something else. Apparently babies don't develop an allegery until the 2nd or 3rd exposure to the drug.

Now we get to get up at 1 am for another dose of Benedryl. I thought those middle of the night feedings were over, but not the meds I guess. So I don't think it was the milk after all. I just feel sorry for the little guy. He has been through so much this week.
