Hello - I started introducing rice cereal this week to my 4 month olds in the AM and PM. I have been doing it before I breastfeed them, but I have read that others feed solids after breastfeeding. Is that the better way of doing it? Any advice helps...Thanks

I would bf first, then do solids. The breastmilk is the most important, the solids are just for practice right now! [IMG]

What becky said. Actually it is recommended to hold off on solids until they are 6 months. But, if you plan on starting now, I would start with just one meal. Breastfeed and then feed rice cereal within 30 minutes of it. It is just practice eating at this stage.

I started mine on rice cereal at about 4 months also. I would strongly recommend breast feeding first, then 30-60 minutes after give them a little rice cereal. Mine didn't take to the cereal at first, so I stopped and tried again 2 weeks later. They did better. It was slow in the beginning. They only ate small amounts. By 6 months I was feeding them rice cereal twice a day and started to introduce veggies. Mine are now 10 months and eat 3 solid meals a day, but I STILL breastfeed about an hour before offering the solids.

Thanks for your input. My doctor was the one to tell me to start introducing the rice cereal to them now. My ds seems not to mind it to much. But dd pushes most of it out of her mouth with her tongue.

I give mine cereal first and then breastfeed as I feel they get too thirsty after eating. With your spitting it back out..just keep putting it back in and they should learn. My last doctor had my kids on cereal at two weeks and babyfood at four weeks. If you ask you mom, and you are as old as I am, YOU went home from the hospital on cereal.
