My husband and I found out today that we are expecting twins! The only problem is that one of the babies is measuring smaller than the other. One is measuring 6w4d, which is exactly where I am at, the other is around 6w1-2d. The doctor seemed a little concerned, although she said both sacs had good heartbeats. She talked about vanishing twin syndrome, but said we would know more at our next u/s in 2 weeks, which of course seems like a lifetime away. Just wondering if anyone else experienced this when they found out they were carrying twins early in the pregnancy and what happened.

That is the exact same thing that happened to us. We found out we were having twins at 5w4d and they were measuring in the 4th week. We didn't even have heart beats, just sacs. She was concerned and told us we might have to prepare for a miscarriage - joy of finding out we were having twins, to fear of miscarriage. We went back the next week b/c I was bleeding and they grew so much and caught up to exactly where they should be. My friend is a radiologist and he said that you always give embroyos the benefit of the doubt - they catch up quickly and can always be off a few days, give or take. I would try to relax and just take it easy. I stressed so much that I think it made the bleeding worse, which made my stress worse, which was just a bad situation. But, here we are - 13 weeks and they are doing great! You can check out my blog and go to the first post and you can see the ultrasound pictures and the difference in the size in ONE WEEK. When do you go back? If you want to go back in a week to ease your mind - call and ask - they should let you.

    Hope all goes well.

We found out that 7 weeks 5 days that we were having twins. Twin A was measuring 5-6 days behind twin B. We went back a week later and they were measuring two days apart. At my last ultrasound they were looking great and very active. I know it's hard, but I would try to relax.

Hi and welcome to Twinstuff! Congrats on your twins. I think it is normal for twins to measure a few days apart, I know mine did and the dr. never seemed concerned.

congrats on the twins 1st of all, and i was the same way. i think you will be ok my twins have always been 4 days apart when measured and now they are 4 days apart and an oz diff in weight, so it just depend. vanishing twin is something that can occur, but when i found out they werent same and u have to remember that an u/s can always be off as well by up to a week. u should be just fine. Welcome to TS and cant wait to see ur progress!!! let us know how the next u/s goes. and as hard as it sounds try not to stress

    Congratulations and welcome!!!!

My twins measured differently from that very first appt (my doc too was concerned; in fact one sac didn't even have a heartbeat at my 7 week appt). But over time, as they grew and thrived, it just became apparent that I had one big baby and one small baby. I still do!!! :)

When I found out it was twins @ 5 weeks they saw no heartbeat… and I was told by my Dr. that I would keep the “twin” fact quiet until I hit my second trimester because vanishing twins is more common then people realize… he went on that “heck all 3 of us could have been twins”. Well we went in at 10 weeks and they had great heartbeats and one even danced while the other did a summersault …well I couldn’t hide it any more and spilled the beans about my little beans… mine are identical and measured 2 days apart, but my Dr. wasn’t concerned and told me that’s normal…

If you want to see the 10 week u/s here it is (but i remember when i was @ 6 weeks 9-10 weeks seemed a lifetime away... especially to my mom who I had to tell.)

I had my first ultrasound at 20 weeks and that was when we found out we were having twins. One baby always measured a lot smaller than the other until about 33 weeks and then they stayed close in size.

Thank you all so much for your comforting words, it's made me feel a lot better. We are so excited about the thought of having twins. I'm just trying to tell myself to stay positive and I realize that worrying will not make any difference, except to make me feel stressed, which is not a good thing right now. We are most excited to tell our 9-year old son who has been waiting a long time for a baby brother or sister and the thought that he may have 2 new babies is just so exciting. I look forward to keeping in touch with you all and sharing this special time. I'm sure I'm going to have a million more questions!

That is the best thing about our “surprise” pregnancy, our 9 year old Son has been asking for a little brother since he could talk and by the time he was 4 he even said to me once in the car “please Mom, I’ll even take a sister….”
My older sister is 9 years older then me… and my Mom said it was a great age difference (and it didn’t hurt my sister LOVED to babysit)

    good luck

My boys have always measured a little bit apart, although now they are pretty even in size. (big bouncy kicky boys!)

:sign0016: to Twinstuff and congratulations on your twins! Our babies were a little apart for awhile, and then there was a pretty big difference due to some complications. It's common. I know you'll be counting down the days till your next appointment; please let us know how it goes!

:sign0016: At my ultrasound my twins were a few days apart. Twin B was about 3 days behind Twin A. It sounds like it's pretty common. Don't worry until their is something to worry about. I had a miscarriage in March of a singleton pregnancy. I am doing my best to take my own advice. ;) Hang in there and think pink, blue or both! Everything happens for a reason. I have had to come to realize this. Good luck.

Ours have always been a few days a part as well. It's so hard in those early appointments...I remember them well! Hang in there and hopefully like so many of us you'll be able to see that they've grown proportionately. U/S measurements are definitely not always exactly on, plus babies just come in different size :)
