If the car is moving, I always put the handles down. It was law here. Because in an accident the handle can be forced down on top of the infant.

On another thread I belong to, this debate came up.

I usually kept it up, because was easier to get DS out of the back of the car (2 door car) with it up.

According to some the manual says to keep the handles down. Some asked police officers and they said down as it's safer if you are in an accident.

Down...in the event of an accident, the car seat raises up and cocoons the baby against the back of the seat of the car(primarily to protect him from debris which is the biggest risk of injury to little baby in a car accident) and if the handle is in the way, the car seat won't go against the back of the seat and protect as it should. I asked in my infant/child cpr classes. That's why they only hinge to the base or seat at the bottom of the seat.

I never put mine down until we bought a minivan (at 6 months) and found out we should have been putting it down! Yikes!

Alright you say down. Down, like behind them????
Sorry I must be dense, but for instance.
    I have an SUV.
Should the handle be up against the back of my driver and passenger seat or should it be in front of them.
We used to have it up against the seat, but then we looked in the manual and it said not to bein "B" or "C" position.
Wouldn't this be in "C" position????

Down meaning not in the upright carrying position... after you carry them to the car, lock your seat in and use the release on the handle to put the handle down or back toward their heads...i don't lock mine all the way back against the driver or passenger seat though. I have my seat up as far as I can comfortably drive but the handle from the carseat if "locked" in the down position would be too snug to allow the seat to cocoon up in the event of an accident. I'm not sure that made sense or not.

    I am still confused.
I pulled out my manual(Graco snugride) and it says there are 5 positions.
    A B C D E
    A is the carrying position.
    B C D convenience
    E sitting
It says NEVER use B or C in the vehicle.
    We were using C before.
You all are saying it should be down, but that would mean the C position right???
