inf. carseat vs. subaru outback

OK, I know a Subaru Outback is not a huge car, but I never imagined our infant carseats wouldn't fit in them. We just put ours in and I am having to drive w/ my knees practically in the dashboard. I'm only 5'6".Has anyone made this work? Do we just not know how to put carseats in?

I had an Outback when I had my first baby. She was born in 5/2001 so I had a 2000 or 2001 Subaru. If I remember correctly we had to put her in the middle - or maybe behind the passenger side. My husband is tall so we couldn't put her behind the driver. So I don't think you are doing anything wrong - we had a Graco Snugride. I don't think we could have put two in there without it causing problems for the driver.
Good luck - you probably want to get your installation checked by a car seat tech at the Fire Station.
Also check out other boards such as the Baby Bargains website (windsorpeak.com) or on babycenter.com and ask your question - alot of car seat techs check those boards and are good about giving advice on car seats.

this is SO IRONIC to me b/c i have a subaru outback 2002, which i LOVE, and i can't recline back at all when in the passenger seat. i'm 5'6", too...lol. i love the car though, but guess where my husband is going tonight? to the honda dealership to most likely purchase an odyssey mini-van. i wish i could go, but i'm on bed rest...

when trying to put the two car seats, rear-facing, in the subaru, there is basically no room for my mom to fit in the middle either. then, we tried putting one car seat in the middle, one on the end, and my mom on one side, and the car seat in the middle wobbled too much. so, dh is off to possibly purchase a mini-van, and i'd be a little sad to see my subaru go, but i need some leg room.

 

We had exactly the same problem - only we had a Legacy. We ended up having to buy a new car (Mitsubishi Legnum) when the boys were about 6 months as my DH couldn't drive safely (knees touching the dash).
