In excruciating pain

    Hi ladies,

I'm on my 12th week of bed rest--this has been eternal! (reason is a short cervix) I don't have words to describe how hard this journey has been. But now, finally, as I am about to hit the 32 week mark on Tuesday my doctor says he'll take me off bed rest. He says the risks of bed rest are not worth it after 32 weeks--I am extremely short of breath and totally out of shape, since I've been lying down for so long.

Here is my problem though--I am experiencing extreme pain in my lower back, in my pelvis and on top of that terrible sciatica. If I lay on my side, my pubic bone starts getting stuck and I hear a grinding noise and a pop when I move out of that position. It's so painful I end up avoiding being on my side at all. But when I'm on my back, my lower back starts to hurt a lot and my sciatica flares up, so I get these jabs of deep pain traveling down my buttocks every time I move, even the slightest. On top of that, walking is even worse, and don't even mention sitting! When I walk to the bathroom I feel as if someone is compressing my lower back and it hurts! When I sit up my sciatica gets bad.

IN OTHER WORDS--there is no comfortable position for me right now. I consider myself to have a relatively high pain threshold, but this is really bad. I have a hard time focusing on other tasks--can't read, do computer or watch TV for long because the pain is always there. This is so frustrating, I spend the whole day dreading nightime because it's the most uncomfortable 7 hours of the day. I really want to hold on to these babies for at least 4 more weeks but it's so hard to even think of enduring this pain for that much longer!

Did any of you experience this at the end of your pregnancy with twins? I have three other kids and while I did have some back issues it was NEVER this bad. Please, I'm in need of some encouragement!

Wow, I had some back pain with bedrest for sure, but nothing like what you're describing. I'm sorry you're going through all that. Congratulations on making that 32 week mark though. That's awesome!!! Keep up the good work, you are an amazing mama already and the end is in sight :bow2:

 Momma!! I am sorry that you are so uncomfortable. Have you tried taking tylenol or maybe a heating pad on a lower setting? Both of those would at least take the edge off for me. You are doing a great job!! Congratulations to almost making it to that 32 week mark!! :yahoo:

Thanks to you both for the kind words. I do take Tylenol whenever it gets really bad, but I don't like to overdo it. And I live with a heating pad by my side...
What keeps me going is the thought that even if it hurts it will be over in a few weeks and the longer the babies stay in, the better for them!
    Thanks again!

I have a similar issue - I can't lay on my left side at all, my hip joint hurts like hell after 10 min or so. I try to stretch my legs laying down and that seems to help a bit. I've been on bed rest with short cervix as well for 5+ weeks, and have about 12-14 more weeks to go. To stay limber, I also bought one of the pilates band (stretch rubber band) and I do some basic exercises laying down. As far as sciatica, ask your doc if you can go to a chiropractor - mine had been my savior throughout the pregnancy. Hope this helps - you are almost done!!!!

Ditto about the chirpractor. I would be in so much more pain without him. But I must say that is sounds like your pubic bone separated. Have you gone to the Dr and have that checked out. Nothing should be making a grinding noise when you move around....plus the pain that you describe, it sounds like your having pubic bone issues. Gosh, I hope I am wrong.

Pat yourself on the back though. You are doing an amazing job keeping those babies in.

I've only been on bedrest for 11 days (I'm 30w4d currently) and already my hips and back are killing me. If I try to sit up in bed, propped up, which is more comfortable, I start to get contractions, so I know that's a no go. I try to switch between being on the right and being on the left, and being at slightly different angles, etc. It helps a little but not a lot. My heart totally goes out to you with 10 weeks under your belt!

I'm soo sorry for your pain. I thought that I was in pain. I've got the hip pain in my left hip. My right hip is dislocated, but it doesn't hurt as much. My lower back is killing me when I'm on my feet more than 10 minutes. I feel like a fricking baby 'cuz women have babies all of the time. (I've had this cold for over 3 weeks hasn't helped my attitude either. I have the worst worst sore throat- I actually took vicodine today to try to help take some of the pain away) I am lucky for the pregnancy pain 'cuz my girlfriend is a massage therapist and she's using me as her practice patient!!!! So, I've been getting a free massage weekly. If you don't go to the chiro maybe try a massage to see if it helps in those trigger areas in the lower back & gluts area... Hope things get better for you kiddo!

I have been on bed rest for 8 weeks. I have had the same pelvic pain since about 18 weeks. When I was on indocin it went away but when I went off the meds at 28 weeks it came back with a vengance. As of right now I can not walk, get dressed or sleep. I feel like I have been in a serious accident and I am paralzyed from the waist down. ( i had back surgery and this is nothing compared to that). Since I am on bed rest I can not go to physical therapy. I also do not like taking tynole but I need to just to get dressed and to go to my appointments. I have actually resorted to valet parking and wheelchairs. It is just not worth it at the end of the day. I have actually needed to sleep in a different bed because our bed is too high and I can not get my legs up that high to climb in. Pelvic seperation sucks and I feel for you. Both babies head are low and in my pelvis making it worse. I am only 33 weeks but I want the pain to stop so badly. I was told to wear a maternity belt and not to go up and down stairs. It makes it worse.
