I'm sure they think I'm nuts-

What puts you over the edge and makes you take your kid to the Emergency Room? I've been battling 102-104 fever (with fever meds) with Macie since Friday. After her acting half lethargic this morning, I had enough and headed off to the ER which is almost two hours away. Naturally, for the first time in days her temp never went over 100 while there (for FIVE hours!) and she acted okay. Of course there is more that was going on, but I just had to see if anyone else takes their kids to the doctor and the kid gets half well in the process!

Anyhow- I feel better knowing what all is going on now and that she is okay, but sometimes I feel like I take her to the doctor too soon. My Mom and MIL both say not to worry about it but I just don't want to seem like a hypochondriac! (sp)

So maybe this post is crazy... just wondering if anyone else second guesses themself as to when is the right time to throw up your hands and head off to the ER or doctor's office.

Oh yeh, when we got home and I checked her temp... it was almost 101. :headbang:

I'm sorry she is not feeling well. :( I always feel like I should tough it out instead of running to the doc but ya know I'd rather be safe than sorry. Don't listen to anyone else but your gut instinct if you don't feel comfortable and your child is not acting normal you are the one who would know best. I hope she gets better soon!

they always miraculously get better upon walking in the Dr.'s office or ER. Drives me nuts. We try to wait on some things, but like the pp said trust your Mommy gut. You know your kids the best and if it gives you reassurance that it's nothing too serious then taking them in is fine. I've been having battles with the pedi's about one of my kiddos for months now and finally we got it figured out, but I was up there every single week for the same thing over and over again. I hope she feels better soon.

I've always tended to go with gut instinct on those kind of decisions. But, then again, no one gives us a hard time about going to the Emergency Room here, it's completely covered by insurance, no questions asked. So, if I'm really worried & think they need to be seen, I will take them. I have to be pretty worried though, because sometimes the wait is crazy!

Coming from a family of nurses, I don't really need to go to the docs that often. All I had to do was call my mom, sister, or uncle (now I can look in my own textbooks). If they all had the same answer then I just listened to them.

However, none of them are ped nurses so they can't always give me an answer. If my gut tells me something is off then I'll call the ped. I do like to try to wait things out but I also have 4 kids. If there's no blood or bones sticking out then I don't have time to worry ;)

Listen to your gut, and even if you're not sure, just remember that the docs are there for a reason. A fever like that likely would have concerned me, too.

That happens to me all the time!! I am terrible for second guessing my self and I am a nurse. For me I probably wait to long most of the time because I know how they are going to treat me once I get there and I also have to drive an hour to the nearest hospital. I have started to take them sooner. Especially since I had the twins because they have more health problems from being premature. I say its better to be safe than sorry and kids can go bad on you really fast so often if you wait too long they may be even sicker than you would think. I think you did the right thing!

Living that far from an ER I would have done the same thing. Our ped has Sat. hours so if I'm worried enough, I'll go there. Knock on wood, I have yet to take the boys to the ER but I went a ton when I was pregnant. I agree to go with your gut!

Having 5 kids and 13 years of experience of mommyhood, it takes me quite a bit to get to the point of going to the ER! That said, if you have peace of mind after taking her, it was worth the trip in my opinion. You aren't a hypochondriac, you were worried about your baby. I would suggest calling the nurse line at the ped(if you have one?), and maybe they can offer some guidance, but trust that mommy instinct.

We call it the "parking lot cure" at the Vet Hospital. Dog's owner calls and says their dog is limping, gets to Vet office and totally fine. Magic parking lot!

    Just being funny!

They are your babies. If you are ever concerned take them. You wont regret it. You will only regret not going if it turns into something more serious. Our Ped has a nurse line and they are pretty good over the phone telling me what needs to be done after hours. I also think our hospital has a nurse line for Peds as well. Might be worth some investigation on your part.

I hope her fever stays down today.
