So I'm eating little and often, and way more than I normally eat - at least double. I'm also planning on seeing a nutritionist next weeks who specialises in prenatal.
I saw the nurse midwife last wednesday and she said that she's not worried and I'll find out at 18weeks when I do an ultrasound.
But I'm worried that if I haven't put on any weight that the babies are not growing enough.
how can I tell without doing an ultrasound? should I insist on having one earlier?
I would love some reassurance - can you tell me how much weight you had put on by weeks 14?

    :(

Well I didn't find out it was twins until week 14, and had only put on 1 pound thus far. I really didn't start gaining serious weight until around week 18/19, then it was like 5 pound increments. Went up super fast. But, total, I have only gained 36 pounds and I am 35 weeks pregnant.

My weight gain was really slow in the beginning - at 14 weeks I had only gained 3 pounds. If your midwife isn't worried, I wouldn't be too worried either.

I had the same concerns because I was very sick in the beginning and actually lost weight at some point, but now I am almost twenty weeks and I have gained 12 pounds it seemed to come all at once and suddenly. My midwife told me not to worry because the babies will take what they need and what ever is left over is for you. That's why she wants me to eat protein so that I feel like I have more energy.

I lost weight at first. I didnt even gain a lb back until around 20 wks or so..The past 2 weeks I gained 6lbs so I guess the weight is a coming now! :)

As long as your Dr has no concerns, I wouldnt either

I had not gained any weight at 14 weeks. In fact, I lost weight consistently throughout the first trimester (probably about 5-10 pounds) from sickness and lack of appetite, and only started to gain moderately in the second. At 23 weeks plus, I have only gained 10 pounds but my babies are right on target size wise (both are right in the middle of the curve).

I had the same concerns! I am 4'11" I thought I would put on weight fast. I had horrible morning sickness until about week 20 I hadn't gained any weight at 16 weeks. I asked my Dr about it and he laughed....he said not to worry it would come. I will be 26 wks on Thursday and have gained 21 lbs.

Hi. Same here... I am 15 weeks today and at my appointment last week I had only gained 3 lbs and doctors seemed very happy and were even surprised that I gained any at all with the sickness, etc. With my DS... it was the same. But don't worry... the weight will come later! :)

By 19 weeks I had gained 5lbs after losing about 5lbs at 15weeks with the flu. My midwives said there was just one baby b/c I was so small. When we had the u/s they discovered there were two! Sounds like you are doing fine! You may want to focus on protein filled foods or even protein shakes (I preferred milk shakes).

Most will lose or not gain anything in the first 20 weeks or so. The babies aret really putting on much weight as of now. I havent gained anything either. I was up a 1lb, and I am sure I am still the same as I was a month ago. I wouldnt worry about it. You'll start gaining more weight once you get passed the 20 week mark.

As of this morning I am down 8lbs. I saw the dietitian last week (to start the gestational diabetes diet early) and just started to follow things today. It's a TON of food but I know I have to eat it so the babies gain well. I thought I was eating enough but I guess I wasn't. You probably still need more calories then you are getting. Seeing a dietitian can really help make you feel better and point you in the right direction. Try not to worry my Dr. was fine with my weight so far. She said it would be until 18 weeks that she starts to worry.

don't worry... the weight will come on... i lost a pound the first 14 weeks than gained 50 from week 14 to week 37... it will happen and doesn't mean anything is wrong with the pregnancy.

I'm nearing 20 weeks and still about 8 lbs under my starting weight. Lost about 15 lbs total, but it's coming back on now at a good rate. Midwives think I check out just fine and that I'm eating appropriate things, so I'm not terribly concerned. The babies were measuring ahead at the 18w ultrasound.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, and just make sure you're getting the best nutrients you can. Proteins, veggies, fruits, good fibers.

Another loser here! I lost 30 pounds from conception to week 28, then I started gaining slowly for about 5 weeks, then in the last week and a half I gained about 35 pounds, putting me up 30 pounds overall. And my kids were fine, no NICU time.

I gained no weight after 14 weeks either (and I was nor under nor overweight). I gained about 8lbs by 24 weeks. In the end I gained 43lbs (of which 13lbs in the last 3 weeks, mainly fluids ... I left the hospital 48 hours later pre-pregnancy weight) and gave birth to 2 almost 8lbs babies!

    Don't worry, it will come!

I did not gain a single pound until I was 21 weeks. Now I have gained 25 and my girls are measuring big big big :)

I wouldnt worry at all during this point. i was so sick during the first trimester that i hadn't gained really anything. At 31 weeks, i had gained 20 lbs total, but the boys are always measuring even on the big side, so my ob has never worried. The babies will always take what they need.

Thank you everyone so much for your reassurance - I tend to worry too much.
I will probably laugh at myself when I am 37 weeks and huge just for worrying about putting on weight!!!!

I wouldnt worry. I have only gained 11lbs so far, however, I go back to dr on Monday and am sure I gained more. But I just recently started gaining. Both my OB and Peri arent concerned at all...and both babies are growing great they said. I just went this past Monday and they both measure to be about a pound and a half each. Just cause you may not be gaining weight, dont mean they arent.

I only gained 23 pounds the entire pregnancy. I gave birth at 38.2 weeks and both babies were over 6lbs each. I left the hospital at my pre-pregnancy weight. I ate healthy, didn't restrict myself at all and my babies, thankfully, are happy and healthy. Don't worry about weight gain, there's more than enough to occupy your time with.

I didn't gain any weight until I hit 30 weeks - and then I gained 27 lbs by the time I delivered at 36w...
