I'm Going To Do It!

Yep, the tricycles are waiting as gifts from the "Paci Fairy." They know the story -- we have to send the pacis up in the sky on balloons to the Paci Fairy so she can give them to all the new babies. There are two new babies close to us, so that's good, they understand "new babies."

So tomorrow's the day. I have to make sure DH is going to stick with the program. No running out to the store in a panic to buy new ones!

I'm sure it's going to be difficult, mostly for Jade. She's so attached, but I think it's time for her/them to give it up!

Wish us luck!

I really think it will be fine. Just the distraction of the memory will help. Once they start screaming for them and you bring up "Remember we sent them off on a balloon."

I know when I told Michael, "remember you threw it away...." it was always like a little light bulb went off. He'd get sad and weep a little but he'd stop screaming.

Good luck! I know it was very hard for Ty when I finally took the paci away. He would push it into his mouth and I would have tofish it out. It was quite scary I was afraid he'd choke. So I stopped giving him it and he would scream. It took maybe a month until he finally adjusted. I thought maybe he had a form of autism because he could not handle change.

GOOD LUCK! Keeping my fingers crossed for you!!!

We are not ready to give them up yet. And when I say WE, I mean ME. ;)

Those trikes are so cool, they are gonna love 'em.

Good Luck, Marie!! I thought Nolan would be really bad, but it only lasted a couple of days.

Good luck!!! When my oldest was 3 she gave her paci's to Santa. We left them under the Christmas tree with a note telling him to give them to other little boys/girls who needed them. We put them in a bag and later that night I threw them all away, that way there was no way I could give in to her. Santa in return left her a note thanking her for her paci's and a special gift.

My advice to you would be to get rid of them. That way you don't give in. Everyone was shocked that I threw them away, but my feeling is if you tell them you are giving them away, they can't come back!!!

Good luck. She asked for them for a few days and we just reminded her she gave them to Santa. After about a week, she didn't ask anymore. :)

    Good Luck!!!

Good luck Marie! Please come back and inspire us by telling us how easy it was. Ryan still uses his for sleep mainly. Someday I'll muster up the courage to do it.

    WELL...

It went well in the original execution, they loved the bikes, they both were talking about what was going on and saying "Bye bye pacifiers!" I had bought a bunch of six balloons (the same number of pacis we owned), but it turns out one balloon is no enough to carry one pacifier, so we only sent two pacis up, their favorites (the others I put in the trash and I will not go get them no matter what!) Jade helped me, grabbing one last suck off her favorite paci!  :) And we let go, and they rose slowly..."Bye bye pacifiers! Go to the new babies!" And a gust of wind came and blew them right into a tree!

I'm thinking the last thing we want is for the pacifiers hanging in a tree across the street taunting us. But I told them I guess that's where the paci fairy wants to pick them up. So we played for a bit, then went to Applebee's AND Cold Stone Creamery, and it was discussed a little more and they were very pleasant and happy. I was very glad to see, when we got back home, that the balloons had dislodged themselves and are gone ("Looks like the paci fairy found them!!")

Melissa, as expected, was fine. Jade, melted down a little as she was put in her crib, then cried for a few minutes. I could hear Melissa saying, "Don't cry Jade, the pacifiers went to the new babies..."

Now they are back there, like their normal selves, having a party. So maybe it'l be okay.

    I'll continue to report.

Signing off from New York. B)

Oh, btw, I am aware that this whole approach isn't the most environmentally responsible. But. Well. Sorry.

Aww! Sounds like they took it better than I thought they would!

I bet it won't be that easy for my two! I hope it is a success entirely for you all.

Marie! That is so cute! When it was time to get rid of our oldest's paci, he was really into fish at the time, and we lived on a canal, so we threw the pacis to the fishies and watched them float away.

That is so great!!! I hope that it continues to go smoothly. We will bite the bullet sometime soon because they are getting more and more attached to them and it will just be harder and harder the longer we wait. Oh well. But hat's off to you for going for it!!!

Glad it went well! I'm not sure when we are going to give them up. DH is talking about in a few weeks when he has some time off of work. Ack! I'm not ready.

Yay, sounds like it went well. I love how Melissa was trying to comfort Jade, so cute.

I'm sure it will be a rough few days, but they will get through this, plus they have new bikes now. Glad it went well.

So...just to follow up again, the night went well. Jade threw a fit when we put her in her crib, so we talked a little (and told her we'd be having CAKE for Easter), and she was okay. Not another peep, actually went down better than usual (after that fit). We didn't hear from Jade again till morning, normal time, but Melissa had a little "midnight" episode (also fairly normal, and she didn't mention the pacifier).

Today's nap, probably won't happen, but Jade again had a minor fit when we put her down, but wasn't verbalizing it was about the pacifier like she did last night. Melissa walked back to her room talking about how she's a big girl now, and doesn't need a pacifier, and she has a new tricycle. They are babbling back there now, but that's normal.

So although it's been tough, I'd say it's going better than expected so far. And I'm glad I didn't do it when DH was away, because Jade is really attached to him, it would have been stupid to have them both gone in the same night.

Great news!! Sounds like it's going along swimmingly!! :D Glad the paci fairy found them in the trees.

You are so funny! I was thinking of how I always heard about not letting balloons go etc.... birds ...... yada yada, but the idea was so ingenious that I couldn't bring myself to think of that!! When it's that good, there has to be a little wiggle room!!

Marie - that's fantastic. Hope it continues to go well for you. I am waiting until Archer (the only one who uses one) is about your girl's age before we make the jump. Because then at least I can do the "We are giving them away" thing. I am fairly certain that he would not comprehend that right now!

FWIW, tonight they are screaming bloody murder. DH is on the verge of breaking down, second guessing, etc. But we'll stay strong... :(

That's great, Marie. Just stay strong! Amelia still has her paci for bedtime and naptime. I am thinking of doing the same or taking her to the hospital nursery so she can give it to a new baby. She only has 2 left.

My friend had her daughter throw her paci into their pond. They had just stocked the pond with baby fish and she told her DD that they needed her pacis. It worked for her.

    Hey Marie,

I've been out of town all weekend and missed your post. I hope the girls are getting accustomed to sleeping paci free. It took us about 4 days to get back to normal!

Good luck! Don't give in, it makes life easier to be rid of them! :hug99:
