I went to my doc (who is also our family pediatrician) about my migraines today. He gave me some Relpax to try when I feel a migraine coming on (said it's in the same family as Imitrex). He said that I could nurse through while on the drug, but thts I could pump and dump (and give the boys formula or frozen BM) for 8 hours after taking the med. I am just curious what other people's docs told them about breastfeeding while on migraine meds!

I am reading about this drug, on www.rxlist.com and it IS excreated in breast milk. However I did not see the classification on it. CALL YOUR OB! they will be able to tell you. or you could call the hospital that you delivered at and they should be able to tell you in the lacation services.

I hope you get an answer! if that is not safe, maybe they can give you something else.

and I am sorry that your head hurts.

I found this article about migraine meds and BFing. Don't know if it helps at all. I hope Kristi can chime in soon - she is our local drug czarina! ;)

:hug99: Good luck with the migraines. I used to get them, and they are terrible. Hope you can find something safe that works for you!

I use Zomig for migraines. After discussing with my pharm and doc it was my impression that Vicodin would be better than those types of drugs for breast feeding. In the end I used Vicodin once and didn't BF for 6 hours.

My ped, OB, and family dr say Imitrex is safe. I am not sure about Relpax.

This from Dr. Thomas Hale's website:

"We don't know. No data is available on Eletriptan (relpax). But it is slightly more orally bioavailable, which is a problem. The reason we like sumatriptan(Immitrex) is because of its poor oral bioavailability in infants.

I take Fioricet for migraines which is a totally different kind of drug. It's tylenol, caffeine and a mild barbituate. I've never dumped while taking it and all of my kids are okay.

I've never pumped and dumped. I use one that mixes acetaminophen and codeine and buclizine hydrochloride. I only take it a couple of times a month and almost always catch it early enough to stop after one dose.
