My girls are 11 weeks old today. When they were born the placenta was sent off to be tested to see if my girls were ID or not, and I was told it was one placenta so they are ID. My girls both have the same features but one has a totally different shaped head and one has heaps more hair then the other. Is this normal to have ID twins that look different like that. If anyone can explain how to post pics up here I will post a pic for you all to see.
    Thanks everyone

You can upload a picture to a site like Photobucket. Once it's on Photobucket, copy and paste the "direct link" in here.

I thought my boys were fraternal until about a month or two ago when I finally tested them. I always thought they looked very similar but not id. When people asked me how I told them apart, I could never be exactly sure how to tell them. I just said to me they look so different but yet similar. Their head shape is different which I now know is not genetics but how they were in the womb. Also the amount of hair does not matter. One has more hair then the other. I would love to see pics. I always share though Shutterfly but I think while you are posting, you click the 'choose file' button on the bottom of the screen and then hit 'upload'.

Thanks MichelleL for how to post the pics.

Thanks seamusnicholas. I didn't know how they sat in there can change the shape of their head. Mikayla was Breach born but sat all over the place in me. She could never decide if she was going to be feet first or head first lol. Yes in the end she decided she was coming feet first.

To me they look totally different but it may be just cause I am thier mum. I wasn't sure if maybe they had stuffed up the test results

I know what you mean. Even after I got the test results, I thought to myself, are they sure??? But yeah, it seems like id parents always think they look so different.

I thought Frat myself. They are a bit too young to tell in the pictures. Cuties though.

It's easy for us mommas to pick out the differences in our kids. Among other things, my girls had the different hair amounts. What made the biggest difference in their looks for us though was their size. I actually had quite a few people ask how much older Ainsley was than "the baby" because she was so much bigger.

Keep in mind that the girls haven't been identical since the moment that embryo split. Since then different genes have turned on and off and they've developed separately. There are going to be a lot of things that aren't the same about them. They definitely look identical to me though. :)

My ID twins don't look ID either - first of all - one of them is 4 pounds heavier than the other - so that's a huge difference. And they have diff shaped heads, they were both breech, but one had low fluid, due to TTTS. Oh, and they're completely different in personality and reaching milestones!

I think mine were about that age here and they don't look at all identical to me (they still don't a year later).

I just finished typing the same thing in the frat/id post when I finally uploaded my boys' pics!!
The head shapes can really throw you off, especially when they are first born. As other pp said, it seems to be harder for parents to see that their own twins are ID, too. We spend so much time with them and we know their individual expressions/personalities so well.

From my perspective, I think your girls look totally ID. They are gorgeous!!! Congratulations!

I'm horrible at the ID/Frat game, but just wanted to say that when my placenta was sent off for analysis, it also came back as ONE placenta. However, I had an u/s at 7 weeks that clearly showed 2 placentas & 2 sacs at 2 totally different places in the womb. By my 20 wk u/s, my placenta had fused, but you could still kinda see where. By my 30 some week u/s, it was impossible to tell that I ever had 2 placentas. My boys have the same blood type, so had we not known that I had 2 placentas all along, I may have questioned ID/Frat in the beginning. Now it's just obvious :).

I'm definitely not saying your girls aren't identical. I'm just saying that my lab analysis clearly states 1 placenta (I actually have a copy, so double checked) & mine are definitely frats. Something to ponder.....

My girls didn't look at all alike when they were born, Payton was bigger, her head was pointy, her nose was squished and she was bright red. Piper had a nice round head, a perky little nose and was super pale. Womb position plays a HUGE role in what they look like at first.

Looking completely different just days after birth
    A couple of weeks old
    Payton & Piper
Now, at 17 months, people don't ask if they are identical, they just say 'wow they are identical'.

They are too cute! You are so right with your explanation of womb position.
I would say the same thing about them, now - SO ID!

Thanks heaps for all that. your kids are all georgous. I guess we will have to wait and see when they get older what their looks do. At least for now I can tell them apart lol.

Your babies are adorable! My vote is identical.

My twins are identical girls, now four years old. I always thought they were faternal (despite placenta results saying identical) because they just didn't look that much alike to me. I did have them tested and they are ID. The funny thing is, today I was looking at some baby pictures, and I can BARELY tell them apart! I know who is who, but I had to really look. Thankfully, I labled pictures. At the time I thought thye looked nothing alike. But, a twin mom once told me to always lable so ther is no question late on. I'm glad I did! So, lable your pictures, just in case!

    ID, i think!!

Mine had totally different shaped heads for the longest time(one was breech one was vertex), and one had longer hair than the other, not by much though. I was unsure because of the head thing, but results came back possitive. My ob said the different births of the babies determines the shapes of their heads, one squeezed vag had the cone head , the breech birth bree, had a big round head!

But your girls are gorgeous, and i think id!!
