Ok has anyone had fraternal twins that where in different sacs with a very thin membrane, and shared a placenta? Both my doctor and the specialist think they are identical, but can't tell for sure...second question is does anyone know what a good weight for the babies are at around 19 weeks? Or does anyone remember what theirs were at this stage? Also heart rates? Doctor says everything looks good, but still very curious..

mine were identical and they shared the same placenta and had a very very thin membrane between them, it is possible they are fraternal because the placenta can fuse but if u have a thin membrane they are probably id. Also I dont remember how much my lil ones weighted at 19wks but at 27 wks they were 1 lb 11 oz and 1 lb 15 oz. thier heartrates were always in the high 140-170's depending on if they were awake or asleep. Good to here they are doing well!! and congrats!!! enjoy your little ones kicking around in there, i miss feeling them in my belly ;o)

I wouldn't worry about the whole FRAT/ID thing until they are out of the womb. (unless they are b/g) I think it is just way to hard to tell because of all the ways twins can be carried. A few of my friends were having IDs, until they were born and they were actuallly all frats with different blood types.

My doctor never even speculated on what they were. He just said we would have to wait.

As for weights, we weren't told until about 27 weeks what "estimated" weights were.

I don't believe frats can share a placenta. . . but it may be possible for the two placentas to be fused. If they think they are mono/di (thin membrane separating them, shared placenta), just make sure they are monitored closer things that plague mono/dis more than frats - like TTTS.

If twins share a placenta (chorion) then they are identical. Frats do not share anything in the womb. The membrane always appears very thin, even di/di, as you get farther along. Unless you have a very early u/s and you can see the two babies in the same chorion, you may not know until DNA testing, because di/di twins can look identical if the placenta's fuse and "look" like one. But, if it's truly only one placenta, then they are ID.

We had TTTS, and had it confirmed after birth with the placenta pathology report that we were mo/di with TTTS.

If you have an early u/s pic, post that and then maybe we can take more guesses?

The earlier in the pregnancy that one placenta is detected, the more accurate the information is. One true placenta = identical.
