I found out I was pregnant with twins at six weeks.when i got my ultrasound they were in the same black sac with a thin membrane between the two.they said there was only one placenta.I had my twin girls at 36 weeks and 5 days (induced) after several stops of labor and on bedrest and procardia for 3 months.Anyways...when they were born Chloe(baby A) had a little longer face than (baby b) Leah. They have the same hair color, eye color, nose, ears, lips etc just different face shapes .Leahs is a little rounder. Baby A is the bigger one by 3 ounces. Now everyone is not sure they are identical and im considering a dna test to find out.they will be 4 months old on April 9th.Baby A was vaginally delivered and baby b was pulled out by the dr due to turning breech after baby a was out. Could that be why the difference and with the early ultrasound wouldn't they be identical.I think they look way too much alike to not be but i dunno and its killing me not to know, especially when people ask.

My boys are identical. We did have to do a DNA test to know for sure since ours were di/di. They definitely still have different head shapes. That's one thing you'll hear twin moms talk about is the head shape difference in their twins. Mostly due to positions in the womb. My Baby B has a longer face. And my Baby A a rounder face. You should definitely post some pictures of your girls.

Do you know if they have the same blood type too? I would bet they are identical based on your early u/s. Have you asked about the pathology report of the placenta? My OB was able to tell me at my 6 week appointment that the placenta was actually two fused together. Thus why we had them tested. If you are still thinking of doing a DNA test. I used www.dnasolutions.com for $99. They were very professional.

My boys had one placenta on the u/s, but at birth the placenta was examined (Ryan had IUGR) and we discovered it was two fused. We went from thinking the entire pregnancy that they were identical to thinking they were not. I learned on here that two placentas does NOT mean automatically fraternal so I started wondering about them being ID. Mine have the same blood type, but very differently shaped faces. We've been able to tell them apart from day one (minus one 3am feeding where I got them confused  ). I posted on here for about a year asking what people thought. It was very mixed but a LOT of ID's. So, I did the DNA test Pam mentioned. They are indeed ID and there are days where I doubt the test, but it's SOOO nice to have an answer. If you're thinking about doing the test, don't wait a year like I did. It was such a relief just to know.

For pictures, I upload them to photobucket.com to easily add them to TS.

I'm not totally well-versed in the identical vs. fraternal (b/c mine are boy-girl... they are fraternal)... but I thought that if they shared anything... like the chorionic sac or amnionic sac then they would be identical... is the first u/s where they are sharing the chorionic sac? and are just in two amnionic sacs?

I've read that it depends on which day they split into two embryos... if they split early enough they have their own of everything and look the same as fraternal on u/s... if they split later, after the chorionic sac is in place then they share that... and then the last ones are the cojoined twins where they are already formed and split and are still attached.

Sounds like what you are describing is one chorion - black sac... with the thin membrane being their own amnionic sacs. Have you asked your doctor about it? when you say "now everyone is not sure"... is that just family/friends? or doctors??

I hope you find out your answer, I'd be dying to know too!

If they were in the same sac, they are identical! Identical twins can share everything, somethings or nothing...all depends on when the egg split into two. The longer it takes for the egg to split, the more they share. If the egg splits by day 3, they share nothing.

they were in the same chorionic sac at 6 weeks, 1 placenta and 2 seperate amniotic sacs.the ultrasound tech called them mono/di.n sometimes I get the babies confused because almost everything but the face shape is the same and chloe has a little moe hair. Their pediatrition and the family are not sure. But when i asked the ped. to order a dna test she said it would be a waste of money because she thinks they are looking more and more alike.I'd looked at identical twin ultrasound pics at around 6 weeks online and mine looked the same.So I am beginning to wonder if fetal positions and thr difference in the way they were delivered has somethingt to do with it.Also baby A has a strawberry birthmark on back of leg baby b doesnt.twins are just amazing to me.Sometimes i cant believe i created 2 of these precious things go to http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?...albumId=1891858 to see pics i put them there from my phone, no pics on my computer to put on here yet.(having trouble)

They look ID to me, especially in the sleeping next to each other picture.

Can't look at the pics...at work, but aren't mono/di always ID? Mine are di/di and i always assumed fraternal (well, the doc told me), and I didn't really question that until family and friends started noting that the only real difference in the boys was head shape (to me, they look different most times in many different ways...that's a whole different post). Anyway, L, my presenting baby has always had the more narrow head shape, and J, my baby b, who hogged more room, has the rounder face.

I haven't tested them yet, but based on my having asking the wonderful folks here a few weeks ago, and again about 6-8 months ago (every vote was ID), I'll likely get them tested next year just for the official result.

I think every ID twin has differences because they are in fact, different people. Just because their DNA is (mostly) the same, different genes can express themselves in different ways. They are never going to be ID in every single way, ever. Some ID twins always weigh differently, some have different face/head shapes, some are taller by an inch or 2 than their ID twin. They can even have a different shade of the same color hair and be ID. If you in fact had mono-di twins, they HAVE to be ID, there is no other choice. If they shared anything inutero, they are ID. Even if they had seperate everything, they could still be ID. I would have to say not to spend the money on the DNA test yet, but ask your OB about the placenta. If he sent it to pathology, which they almost always do for various reasons, they will know for sure if it was in fact one placenta (ID ONLY) or 2 fused placentas. If there were in fact 2 placentas, then have the DNA test. It sounds like you have ID twins, but there is always a possibility they are not if there were 2 placentas. My ID boys look quite different due to head shape, but we know they are ID due to them have one placenta, same blood type, etc. Although to me, they have never looked the same they do to others until they get to know them. We Moms always question if they are ID or not!

I think they look identical. Yeah I wouldn't waste my money either, unless there actually ended up being two placentas. I'd call and check on that. My identical boys have a different head shape. One baby has a single dimple on his cheeks. The other has two dimples. One has a brown birthmark on his leg. The other none. One's features are a little smaller although the features are the same. And one has a smaller unit. Interesting huh, but other people can't tell them apart unless they really get to know them and know what to look for.

I am sure a lot of you have watched this, but I saw this special on TV about identical twins and it was really interesting. I learned a few things! It talks about why and how even identical twins can look different and even be different sexes!
