Hey, My name is Kristine and i have two wonderfull twin-babies :) Two nice girls - Elizabeth and Kathrin, but I am not sure if they are identical twins or not, because I had one placenta and two casings for them, And I can't tell by the looks as well, because they have 1kg difference in weights.

I believe that one placenta is ID, unless there were 2 that fused together.. I guess the only way to know for sure is a DNA test..

Of course it is all about the egg, one splitting is ID and two eggs are FRAT.

I agree! Welcome to Twinstuff! I would suggest you get a DNA test to be 100% sure.

They sell them online...can you order one that way?

That is one I found....kind of pricey but can you get that?

I was told that the only way to tell if they are the same sex is through a blood test. Can you at least get their blood types? If they are different then your twins are fraternal. If they are the same then they could be identical.

Affiliated Genetics was where I ordered and had a great experience. They are relatively inexpensive and do ship internationally.

If you are 100% sure that they shared a placenta then they are identical.... but like one of the pp said sometimes the placentas can fuse making it very difficult to determine if they are id or not. My very obvious fraternals (they were b/g so clearly fraternal) had placentas that were very close together. If they had been the same gender it would have been difficult to assess if they were frats or id. without a dna test. Obviously some clear signs that they are frats would be 1. different blood types...2. different genders.... and a pretty good guess would be if they are very different in appearance...like one has blond hair and the other brown...or different color eyes...those would just be maybe good hints that they are probably fraternal. (But even with identical twins they can have variations in what genes turn on...for instance my id. twin is slightly shorter than I am. )

at what stage can to placentas fuse to look like one? is it really early as in just after conception or can it be like when you are in the first tri?

I think it can be hard to tell after the first trimester. I found out about the twins at 13 wks, but my ob at that time said he was "pretty sure " they were id, but couldn't really tell already.
