Identical or Fraternal - Do you want to know?

My girls are almost 7 weeks old and everyone is constantly asking if they are fraternal or identical. I hate explaining that we don't know even though they were in separate sacs. Obviously they are both girls and they have the same blood type. I have no problem telling them apart and most other people can right now, but I think it's because there is almost a 2 pound difference between them right now. As the smaller one is gaining weight, I think they look more alike. They both have auburn-colored hair, but one's is slightly lighter They both have hair that is about an inch long too. I personally would really like to know positively one way or the other. Is it me or do you guys want to know with your twins also if there is a possibility? The doctor told us to just wait and see.

I want to know as well. It is very easy for me to tell them apart when they are next to one another, but if they are separated there are times when I think I have Evan and when I put them together I realize I have Cameron. They have consistently stayed within a couple of oz of one another in weight and 1/4 to 1/2 an inch difference in length. We are waiting until they are a little older to see if OBVIOUS differences appear. If they don't start showing up soon we will definitely have testing done.

Mine are obvious frats (one is blonde w/ hazel eyes the other is brown hair w/ blue eyes and dif blood types.) If there was any question I would have to get them tested as it would drive me crazy. There are several labs that do the tests at a reasonable rate- I'm sure someone on here can give you a name.

You could always post a id/frat thread- we twin mommies have a pretty good track record on correctly diagnosing.

I waited to test until 15 months and it darn near killed me! I don't recommend waiting.

Mine looked very different at birth -- one had the smooshed head of a baby who had spent 24 hours in labor and the other had a touch of jaundice and while their hair is the same color, one had more than the other at birth which made it look darker. While they have never weighed more than a few ounces apart or measured more than an inch apart, one has rounder cheeks and a rounder face while the other has a thinner, more oval face (and the thinner faced boy is always the heavier of the two!) Their little hands/feet/ears match exactly. The test came back a 10/10 match, they're ID.

WOW! I would have totally guessed your boys were identical.

During my pregnancy I had one placenta and was told that my girls were ID. After they were born the doc tested my placenta to see if it was indeed one or two fused, and the pathology came back as one placenta. But that still wasn't good enough for me. I HAD to have a test done, it bugged me so much, I could see such a big difference in them. So I payed the extra money and had a DNA test done, sure enough ID. I understand were you are coming from and IMO if you have the extra money its well worth it. :)

Our girls were in 2 sacs just like yours. We were always telling people we didn't know if they were ID or Frat. We had not trouble telling them apart, but in pictures they looked alike sometimes. We never talked about getting a DNA test - of course now, at 9.5 months we can see that they are TOTALLY different. Mia has blonde hair and blue eyes, is very long and lean and Emma has brown hair and hazel eyes and is...stockier then her sister.

We were about to tell at about their 6 month appt. that they were Frat.

But to answer your question - if they looked a lot alike - yes I would have to know.

I have been debating whether to test the girls or not. They have the same blood type & were in the same sac. When they were born the pathology report was 66% identical, but I still don't know if that means they are infact ID or frats. I want to get them testing but DH thinks it is a waste since the path reports said 66%.

We're curious :) My husband and I say they're Frat, the rest of the family says ID, so we're getting the girls tested as a surprise for their first birthday. I'm actually staring at the testing kit right now. Once we get the results, I'm going to have their doctor's office verify that there actually ARE results, then we'll read them off at their first birthday party. I figured that would be a fun thing to do :).

I just ordered the test the other day. my girls were in 1 sac with a thin dividing membrane. same blood type, hands, feet, eye color, etc. i really want to know for sure. cannot wait! especially cause if they ARE frat my chances of another set jump drastically.

I waited 6 months to get the test, but it was on my mind just about every day from months 2 to 6. My DH insisted frat, but I really questioned and I had to know for sure. Anyway, I finally asked my parents for the test for Christmas and, similar to PP, got the results but saved them to read with everyone on Christmas Day. It was a really fun way to find out. We have it on video, too. (Of course, mommy knew best. The test showed they are identical.)

It used to bug me not being 100% sure when mine were younger, but now at almost 3 yrs old, they look VERY ID and even "I" get them mixed up .. so I am going to assume they are ID, and if they arent .. well .. so be it, I guess time will tell.
If, some day, I have an extra $200, I might be inclined to have them officially tested.

Twinlove4life - from your ticker picture, I always though yours had to be ID. So cute -- and SOOO similar.

My girls shared a placenta, so we knew. If I didn't know I would have testing done to find out. I could barely wait to find out what sex they were. Sometimes mine look different and sometimes they look exactly alike. Their biggest weight difference was .5oz, even though they looked totally different sizes.

Yeah, we had to know so we had the DNA testing done and found out they are ID. You really get tired of not knowing and getting asked a million times and the puzzled looks when you say you don't know ... and now we know for sure!!!!!!!!
