Identical but don't look it - anyone else?

My girls are identical - we know this for sure, they are monochorionic - but although they have the same nose, mouth and ears, they look REALLY different. My pedi told me that this happens and that they will change, but- anyone else have this?

On a funny note, my MIL is SURE they are not identical and tells everyone that, even though I know exactly how they got there and that they are! She's convinced they were fused placentas - sure, tell that to the doctor who implanted that egg!

Okay so I'm assuming you had some type of fertility treatment correct? Did they only implant 1 egg? And even if that were the case it is possible for you to have ovulated at that same time and ended up getting pregnant on your own as well as by the treatments. Not likely if you were having fertility issues but possible. Also my placentas were fused together and if mine were not b/g twins the doctors really wouldn't have known since it just looked like one placenta with 2 sacs. I was actually told during pregnancy that I was most likely having identical boys (DD was crossing her legs and they only saw one placenta) which obviously is not the case. I think the only true way to know if same sex twins are identical or not is to have them tested unless they shared the amniotic sac.

Sorry I know thats not what you were asking but just wanted to throw my 2 cents in there.

My boys are identical. We know this because they had twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome and this only occurs when there is a shared placenta. However they look very different now. Of course one is 2 1/2 pounds heavier than the other one! But the shape of their head is also very different as is the amount of hair they have. Their little features are the same though - eyes, nose, toes, etc. The doctor also told us that given the weight discrepancies at birth (almost 2 pounds) they might look different for a while and that their head shape and height might be different even when the are older.

I am in the same situation as you! I have identical girls, one placenta, & also had a mild case of Twin-to-Twin Transfusion, which obly identicals can have. At first, I thought it was just the weight difference that was causing them to look so different, but when I asked my doc about it he said that it was possible the girls were affected by a process called "Iyonization". Girls get an X Chromosome from their mom & one from dad. Approx 6-8 days after fertilization, during implantation, one X chromosome will become inactive. There s a possibility that the same chromosome does not become inactivated in both female twins. This will cause a difference in their traits. I forgot to see if you have twin girls before I started writing this, so if you dont, then disregard. But I thought this was very interesting. As my girls get older they are starting to look more alike, but I can still see a huge difference. My MIL says the same thing. She swears they are not ID & that Kaylee (the one with all the hair) looks exactly like their dad. It's very annoying. But what do you do???

    Hope this helps!

i was going to post the same question. mine had TTTs also, weight diff., head shape, etc. i guess that each kids looks like themselves! other people think that they look just alike but people who know then can always tell the difference. there is still about a 3 pound weight difference.
