OMG!! I was so grossed out tonight. The babies got some squeezy toys for their bath (you know, water goes in and then you squirt water out). Well I squeezed the little froggy and all of this gross MOLDY GUNK came out!!! EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!

Should I throw all of these toys away??? Should I try to bleach them out???

I threw ours out. I got totally grossed out the same way you did. I had a TON of rubber duckies from their bday and didnt even think about moldly water issue. Needless to say they are all gone.

Same happened to all of ours. Anyone have any GOOD bath toy recommendations that are NOT the squirt toys? I'm on a hunt!

I pitch them all every once in a while, but bleach them in between. Try to remember to squeeze the water out after bath time so they don't have a chance to get yucky! Mine got an Elmo bathtub fishing toy for the tub that they love! It goes on the side of the tub and they use a little magnetic pole to catch a few different magnetic toys.

A friend of mine recommended putting them in the washing machine with bleach -- haven't tried it, but it might be worth a shot before pitching them.

We've had icky yucky toy mildew -- I hate the squirt tubby toys for that reason. I've bleached them and thrown them out and replaced them, and now I just AVOID them!

Right now we have in the tub:

    1) Some of these (but since they don't work very well IMO, I don't recommend them)

    2) Backyardigans (Euniqua and Tyrone) tub toys -- not hard, sorta nylon, made for the tub, and quick-drying -- they LOVE them!

    3) A couple of "flashy ducks" that don't flash anymore. And another duck we've had a while.

    4) AND...#1 favorites -- disposable plastic CUPS and the drippy water faucet!

Same problem here. I have bought them new toys and you know what their favorite is? Disposable sippy cups and an empty shampoo bottle!

Mine LOVE the foam letters/numbers. I think that is how they know letters so well! I'm always so surprised at how they have stayed interested in them.

We go through a bunch of those rubber ducks. We've had a football duck, soccer duck, baseball duck, basketball, witch duck, frankenstein duck, santa duck, reindeer duck, etc.....You name it. I try to squeeze the water out after each bath. After a few baths, they usually get thrown away because I've heard about the GUNK that can appear.

I found some bath toys at the Disney Store. They are GREAT. They came with four characters: Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy. They are solid and do not have the holes in them. I wrapped up each one individually and they made great stocking stuffers.

They have been banned from our house for that reason. Or I keep them with their toys and they never hit the tub.

We had the same problem. The girls would squeeze one and the mold would come out, and so would they. I took all of the toy ducks and put a dab of hot glue to fill up the wholes, no more problems! Just wait until your toys are dry, squeeze the water, mold out, and fill it with hot glue. No more mold!

I always make sure to squeeze the water out of those toys when they are done with their baths. They still get gross eventually, but it takes months and months for this to happen..

I bought Charlie this Parents bath set from Target. Parents Tubby Tug Boat Toy

All 3 of the kids LOVE playing with it!

I got rid of ours for the same reason. We now use the foam letters/numbers, and they LOVE the bathtub crayons! Big hit!

Things that hold/squirt water should be changed once a month to prevent this.

About once or maybe even twice a month, I bleach their bath toys. I fill the tub with HOT water and put bleach in and let them sit for a while. I then put gloves on once the water has cooled down a bit, to scrub them a little. Then I drain the water and fill it again for them to rinse.

It's a pain, but their bath toys do get pretty disgusting. [IMG]I did throw some of their toys away that they've had since they were babies.(There was no hope for them!) HTH

I was just thinking of tossing our toys for this reason! I've been squeezing/bleaching, but they still nappy after a while. At least I know it isn't just us now!

My girls favorite bath toys are empty containers, shampoo bottles, squeezable ketchup bottle, a small kitchen strainer, plastic cups, margerine type tubs. I love them because there were free, they love to pour squeeze squirt fill dump etc.
We also have two bathtub babies and they love to bathe their babies while I bathe them.

The squirty toys are fun, but I toss them every once in awhile. They aren't terribly expensive, so I feel justified in throwing them out if they get a little yucky. I also bleach regularly.

Our favorite bath toys are any sort of 'guy' you get in a McDonalds happy meal. They are often solid, so they don't get gunky. They are just the right size, and I don't feel the least bit bad tossing them every little while.

I was laughing reading this post cause DH and I had the same problem recently, ours do the same thing...so gross. I bleach them but we are gonna look at some of these others that have been suggested and then pitch these. We do have the foam letters/numbers and they rock. [IMG] Mandy

I put mine in the top rack of the dishwasher to sanitize them. I haven't in a while, though, and this post makes me want to go clean all the bath toys! [IMG]

BLECK....I thought I was the only one! I have tried bleaching some of them a few months ago, and I replaced them with non-sqwirting toys. I will have to go see how the other toys look since bleaching them (I got busy and just rinsed them and put them in a bucket in the laundry room!) I never thought of getting bath dolls!!! My dd would LOVE that...she often tries to clean McAuley. I found little plastic dogs at the Dollar Store that are solid...one is in the tub and they enjoy it. I think I need to look at getting them some good toys in there!
I like buckets and stuff, but anything the holds water will be used a cup. We have soft water...so not great to drink, and I don't want them drinking their own bathwater....yuck.

those stackable play cups are great...there are 8 cups that fit one into the other and they all have tiny holes in them so you can hold them up and the kids can watch the water come out...the set has 8 cups (all different colors) for $2.99 at babies r us, toys r us, buy buy baby, etc...they aren't drinking cups, just cups for playing. (i even use them to wash the soap out of their hair sometimes!!)

i always, always squeeze as much water as possible out of those bath toys after every bath and let them dry overnight. I've had them since the girls were itty bitty, and no mildew, etc. one time dh forgot to squeeze the water out, and when i did it a few days later, it did smell funky, but no mildew! I think you just have to be very diligent about it, and you shouldn't have a problem It's like letting your sippy cups fully dry before re-assembling ya know?

I tossed all my bath toys out a long time ago for this same reason. My girls bath toys are household items:

    Sponges
    plastic bowls/spoons
    little plastic watering cans
    plastic turkey baster
    straws

I toss them all in the diswasher (sponges in the washing machine) once a week and they stay clean.
