    Hey guys,

Not sure if anyone ever dealt with this but I think my dd has athelete's foot. I was wondering if there was any over the counter products that I could use on her? Is this something that I need to bring her to the ped for? They have their 2 year appt in a week or so but she is complaining now and then that her foot itches. The heel on one of her feet looks red and kind of like there are little red spots under the skin. She also has some slight peeling on her feet and on the front of her big toe. I have noticed her now and then over the past couple of weeks doing this walk where on that one foot she will only walk on the ball of her foot but she only does it sometimes. Kind of looks like she is limping. I just thought that she found a new and interesting way to walk but now I'm wondering if it's because it has been bothering her. I don't know if I should keep her in socks (which we almost always do) or let her be barefoot but we have a lot of tiled floor and it gets kinda cold. What do you think? TIA for you advice, help and/or suggestions.

    Melanie

You can use the lotrimin over the counter, and just make sure to change her socks often and not to let her feet stay sweaty. If the lotrimin doesn't work I would mention it to the ped at your appt next week :)

The spray stuff, Tinactin. Tinactin will help with the itching. I think it would be okay to use on kid feet. Definitely bring it up to the doctor, change socks and keep her feet dry. I'd fumigate her shoes too. You don't want to let it go untreated. I've seen some nasty feet with the big thick toenails as a result of not getting treatment.

What did you do!?! I was curious!! :) I had no idea what you would do. I might use DH's Tinactin on them, but I am glad you asked!!

Honestly, I haven't done anything yet. I think I will call the ped tomorrow and ask them over the phone what I should do. She has actually had a couple of toenails for over a good year now that are very thick and harder to cut. I didn't think much of it since my pinky toes have always been like that and thought she just inherited it from me. For now, I have been trying to let her be barefoot when I can but not sure if that's the right thing to do. Her feet tend to sweat very easily when she is in socks. I will call tomorrow morning and get their advice. Thanks for your resonses!

Does she have sweaty feet? Sounds like what I used to get as a child. Here is a link I found doing a quick search, which is what I got. I would also peel quite a bit, due to the sweat.

There is not much you can do, but wear 100% cotton, go barefoot, and buy leather shoes that breath (no synthetic materials).

alright, this is going to sound weird- but I'd have them do a scraping and be sure it's fungal before turning to anti-fungal remedies, because I went through over a year of treatment when my dr. SWORE I had AF. My heels and soles were itching/burning like mad and would get pink and the skin would peel. Well after a year of a billion different creams, powder, soaking my feet in bleach water, etc... I demanded to go to a derm. and they finally did the scraping that said it was NOT fungal. Now, the dermatologist never figured it out either- just said it was some kind of eczema that we'd just have to try different stuff by trial and error to fix. We moved shortly thereafter to another part of the country, and magically my feet healed. Turns out it was ALLERGY related. So now when I go home, I make sure to bring my zyrtec, otherwise my feet start itching again!

Yes, I would think it is more eczema related than fungal. (On a side note, if I remember our pedi correctly, she said athlete's foot is pretty rare in little ones.)

Hmmmm....very interesting guys. She has dealt with eczema since she was younger and still gets it even now. I wonder if that's what it is. Well, we are moving to Puerto Rico this fall so perhaps a move will do the trick. The air there doesn't get so dry, don't need to use heat etc. We are wondering if she has allergies as well. Ped is not sure but she gets asthma when she gets sick and is currently being nebulized to prevent another flair up. I wonder if it's allergies? You have presented some different thoughts for me. Thank you. I will mention these at the ped later this week.
