My sister had a baby almost a month ago, she had a very uncomplicated pregnancy and delivery. Her new baby boy has turned into in her words "a bad baby" he has crying jags for hours every day. She said there is never a good time with him. I talk to her every day and every time she starts crying. I feel so bad for her, she was weepy even before he started his crying periods. Do you think this is just a overtired, new mom, or something more?

I never had a colicky baby, so I don't know if this is normal for the mom or not.

We have talked about PPD because I thought after I had my oldest I had it, but never knew what it was until after the fact. I told her she should go to her OB, but she said if she had a good baby she wouldn't be crying all the time.

I know I am rambling, but I feel so bad, she has no family around her and it must be so tough, I just can't imagine.

A certain as you can diagnose from a post like this I would say she has PPD, AND she is a tired mom. A colicky baby is a severe challenge. It's hard to even describe how drained you can be. However, the fact that she says there is never an enjoyable time with her baby...that sounds like PPD.

OMG, colicky babies are TOUGH to deal with. I had two, and was by myself most nights. I feel for her, it is AWFUL. I think I would strongly recommend that she go to see her doctor so they can help determine if it's PPD or just the baby blues. Oh man, the poor thing.

I agree, I think she may have PPD. The crying all of the time, and her calling him a "bad baby", and never having a good time with him, are pretty big signs that she is experiencing some depression. I hope you can convince her to go to the doctor. There is no need to suffer with PPD. You are a great sister! :hug99:

Also, as far as the baby goes, does he have reflux? Maybe that is causing the constant crying/pain?

I would say she probably has PPD. The baby may or may not be colicky, they can pick up on our moods and if she is feeling frustrated and exhausted, that may make him cry like that as well. Its an endless cycle, he's miserable because shes miserab le and shes miswreable because he is. talk her in toi going to ther doctgor.

Another vote for PPD. There should be some enjoyment, even if it is hard and he's colicky. I'm glad she has you to talk to.
