i have developed a strange craving for corn starch. i have spoken to the ob about it. its like when you squeeze the box the crunchy sound that you get, well i like that sound in my mouth as i rub it between my tongue and roof of the mouth. i need to get this under control. have any of you had this and how do you get rid of it.

I can't really answer u but I have read that this happens to some pregnant women-some get weird cravings for things like dirt, etc. I'm sorry you're going thru this craving but it will pass! Did doc say anything about vitamin mineral defficiency testing?

Maybe try eating some fresh corn? Corn starch is, after all, made from corn. It might satisfy the craving. Sounds like you're craving carbs. I had a friend who craved dirt - she'd have to drive by a major construction site every day on her way to work and would just drool at the piles of dirt. I don't know that it necessarily means you're lacking something in the diet; it seems more likely to be caused by weird hormones. I have been unlucky enough throughout this pregnancy to not crave one single thing. I thought it might be kind of fun.

Have you had a test lately for anemia? Sever iron deficiency can result in something called PICA where you have this powerful need to chew on something like dirt or ice. There's a wikipedia entry on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pica_(disorder).

I hope you find the cause!

I can't really help you with your cravings as I am currently batling one of my own. I am a diabetic who craves gummy bears of all things. I indulge my cravings in small enough doses, so as not to spike my sugar levels. :bubble:
I hope your conversation with your doctor tomorrow will help you a little more. Good luck and keep us posted!

I should proofread my posts before hitting the button!!!!

How odd! I don't think eating corn starch is bad for you, but I would ask the doctor to test you just to make sure you don't have any vitamin deficiencies. Are you following the vitamin protocol from Dr. Luke's book? "When you're expecting twins, triplets..." Laura

Have you had your iron levels tested? I think people get strange cravings like this when their iron is low.

I don't think corn starch is bad for you. No sodium, just carbohydrates. I guess if you are just crunching it and spitting it out it can't be too terrible. Its used to thicken so I guess I would be careful of constipation if you are swallowing it.

Hi! Do you live by a Barnaby's Pizza? They have a delicious cornmeal crust, it is so yum and maybe that will help. I don't know much about cornstarch but it sounds like you are having a sensory craving. If you can think of something else that feels like that that you could eat, maybe that would work. I don't know of anything off the top of my head but good luck!
