I hope no one minds me posting this question here but I need some help figuring out what size i shouldd be buying most of their layette items in. Most advice out there says not to buy newborn sizes b/c they grow out of it so quickly but im thinking that since even full term twins are usually smaller so should I be buying most of the onesies, sleepers, and other layette items in Newborn or in 0-3 months??? I have a bunch of premie clothes that were given to me by other twin mom's so I have plenty of preemie clothes some say fit up to 5lbs and some say fit up to 7lbs and the newborn stuff says it fits up to 8.5 lbs.

I guess what I'm asking is should I be buying their layette items in newborn sizes or 0-3 month sizes??

    Thanks so much

My twins were born at pretty decent sizes (6lbs and 7lbs 6oz) in May, and I found that I used the newborn stuff for at least two months with DD (less with DS - maybe one month), and she is still fitting into her 0-3 months clothing just fine (they'll be 3 months this Wed). DS on the other hand is already filling out the 3-6 month clothing !! It really depends on the babies sizes and how quickly they grow, and I really think that length matters more then weight in most cases as far as when they move to the next size up.

    Good Luck!

    Erica,

My twins were quite small when born at 34 weeks and spent some time in the hospital, so by the time they were home, there was no need for preemie sized clothes. I have heard this from many people; that if your kids are born smaller than 5 pounds, they'll probably be in the hospital for a little while, where they don't need cute outfits. Mine went straight to newborn sizes when they got home and stayed in them for about 2 months. Then, they blew through the 0-3 really quickly and are now in 3-6 months (they'll be four months old next week). I didn't get nearly as much use out of the 0-3 sized clothes as I thought I would. As the PP said, length seems to matter much more than weight.

So, I guess I don't really have much advice other than to say that whatever you buy will be fine, but don't stock up too much on one size. I found that about 10 onesies and 6 sleepers in each size was all we really need. I don't really dress my girls in anything other than onesies and sleepers at this age. Dresses and pants outfits seem too difficult to me, and less comfortable for the girls. I'm not sure what other layette items you're thinking of buying, but you probably don't need all the accessories that the stores sell! In case it helps, I do laundry every other day.

Good luck... and enjoy the remaining weeks of your pregnancy!

Thanks everyone your responses are REALLY helpful!

i'm thinking of buying in newborn sizes for each baby:

    5 onesies
    3 sleepers
    2 gowns

    Do you think that's enough?

Should I buy 0-3 month sizes now or wait till they NEED them?

That sounds reasonable. Even if they are big, you can roll up their sleeves. I think you should wait to buy 0-3 months. From my experience, when people come visit the babies they bring gifts- usually clothes. And if your friends and family are like mine, they will be practical clothes like onesies and sleepers. If not, you have some time to run out and get more clothes. -Leighann

It depends on how often you do laundry! Knowing myself and how often I do laundry I would buy another pack of onesies to split between the two and some more sleepers and gowns.

When I counted how many thing I had for my babies I made sure to have enough for one week and a couple extra because there would be days when they would go through a couple of things at a time.

In respone to other clothes, I would get a couple of outfits that would be fun to take them to show them off a little bit for special visitors.

I noticed that you are due 2 weeks before me, so that would put you in October, right? My boys were born at 33 weeks and spent 3 weeks in the hospital and they were in premie clothing when they came home and didn't get into newborn stuff until they were about 2 1/2-3 months old. So, by the time they were in newborn stuff, we didn't need short sleeved onesies or the gowns because it was too cold out. My boys spent the majority of their time in sleep n' plays (the cotton or towel material longsleeved sleepers with feet) because it was winter time. Just a thought. :)
