I have been working for an Association that is based in Maryland. I am in Florida so I work from my home and travel a bit. My job was a three year contract job that expires in July. I have just been notified that due to budget constraints my position will be terminated on May 18th.

Dh and I are strapped for $$$ as it is. Our house is too big and it has been on the market for a year now. If we do not sell it before I lose my job we will have to forclose as I am the primary bread winner. We will also loose our health insurance as DH works for a small contractor and does not have health insurance through his company.

What the he*** are we going to do?

Thanks for the vent, I am going to go and cry now...

Amy, I am so sorry. Can you call one of those companies that will buy houses? We have some of them here in Mass. I feel so bad.

I'm so sorry. :( Like others have said, this story is becoming way too common in our society - nobody is immune to these horrible layoffs. It seems like it is happening in everyone's lives (whether their own life or a family member's life). My uncle was just laid off - and my aunt worries about her job each month. It's just really sad.

I hope you are able to find something soon - and I agree with the PP, have you contacted any of those "We buy houses" agencies - I don't know if they are legit or not, but may be worth checking into.

    Good luck!

I'm so sorry to hear that. I'm not sure what field you work in, but you might be able to find freelance work. It wouldn't be steady or come with benefits, but the extra income would help. With so many companies laying off employees, they are relying more on freelancers because they don't have to pay benefits, etc.

Also, I've heard that Starbucks offers good health insurance even for part-timers. Might be something worth looking in to.

i'm so sorry :( not to be another bummer, but dh has been looking for a job since last july and still hasn't found anything! it's SO HARD. we've given up all extra things (gym memberships, my dance classes, going out to dinner, etc. )...
i really hope you find another job soon, or that you're house sells sooner! the market sucks so bad, too, right now.
    i'm so sorry!

Most of my experience is in pharmaceutical sales; however, for the past three years I have been licensing drug information databases to IT developers around the country. I work from home for a non-profit that is based in Bethesda, Maryland. It is an association of pharmacists and I work for the publishing arm that publishes drug information used by many big medical IT developers. In other words, I license the raw, xml data that is used to create the programs that allow pharmacists to print out patient information sheets to accompany perscriptions, or, the data that is used by software developers to build the emergency medical records that doctors use to keep patients records in their electronic systems. Yeah, it took me like a year to understand what I was supposed to be doing :)!

I am so sorry, Amy! It breaks my heart to hear a new story like this all too often happening to people I know. I don't think anyone is getting by without feeling the pain of this economy!

Im sorry to hear this. I know it wouldnt be the same income, but are you able to collect unemployment when they let you go?

Im not sure how it works with contracted work.. and Im asking for my own personal info as well. I work for a contractor and our contract is up for renewal next year, so someone else could get our job if the higher ups decide to give someone else a shot. Im REALLY hoping we keep this contract!!

Also, if your contract was due to expire in July anyway, what did you plan on doing then? Was there a possibility it would renew? I know thats what Im hoping for..but I am going to try to go back to school ASAP.

Good luck getting your house sold. I would call one of those We Buy Houses organizations and see what they'd be able to do for you.

Really sorry to hear this. I used to be in staffing and so I recommend getting your resume updated and out the door. You might look at getting with a couple of staffing firms too - they might find another contract job for you etc.... Stay positive! Big hug!

I'm sorry, and it's sad how this is effecting so many people. I know it's a really bad time to be a drug rep, with lots of lay offs, they seem to be every day, but was wonderring with the new stimulus package requiring (or encouraging) the total switch to computerized medical records if this would help you find another job. Good luck.

 Oh my gosh, Amy. I'm terribly sorry you guys are going through this. Did you already have a job lined up for when your contract was SUPPOSED to end? Sorry if someone already asked that.
