I hope I am doing the right thing?

So I was at my ob today and I HAVE A DATE! I have been really set on having a c/s my whole pregnancy, I think mainly because I am scared of all the uncertainty with a vaginal delivery. Both boys are vertex and face down so they really are in a perfect position for a vag delivery. So I don't know why but today I decided on induction rather than c/s out of the blue. I will be exactly 37 weeks next Thursday when they induce. I am having no complications at the moment. Is there anything that I need to know about being induced? I hope I am doing what is best for the babies. My doctor said I could give it a shot and if it was too rough or I wasn't doing well I could always change my mind in the middle.

If your doctor is willing to do a vaginal delivery, and you are still undecided by 37wks, why not give it a go? I'm really in the same boat as you, feeling the same etc. But somehow I don't think my doc is too comfortable in vaginal as he has experienced it when things go wrong. He hasnt said that in so many words, but this is what I've deduced.

With me my baby B keeps flipping, so we don't really know how they will be positioned at 37wks. But doc has told me that if one is breech or transverse then c-section will be our option. I'm ok with this.

It is difficult making this decision as you have two lives you're responsible for. But this is our major step in parenthood (well for me anyway as I don't have any kids). Making life altering decisions..

I hope you find peace soon..

Soon you'll get to see your angels & all this uncertainty will be behind you..

I think you are smart to try vag first, b/c the option of a c/s is always open. I have had 2 easy singleton vag deliveries and frankly will be really disappointed if my girls don't stay head down and come vag.

Actually most doc feel that the benefits of vag delivery are greater for mom and babies, nothing pushes fluid out of those lungs like a good squeeze down the birth canal!

I'll be praying for a safe, uncomplicated delivery for you and your boys.

    Congratulations,
    Jen
BTW, where you effaced or dialated anymore?

Congratulations on getting a date! I asked my doctor Tuesday what she thought was best with having twins c-section or vanginally and she said it depends on the position of the babies and it was too early for us to talk about that. I think I was just trying to prepare my mind that a c-section is ok. I have had 2 vaginal births and it was not bad at all.

I'm sure everybody is different, but just wanted to share my induction story to give you a little of an idea what to expect. I was induced at 38 1/2 weeks. I was undecided pretty much my whole pregnancy on whether I wanted to try for a vaginal birth or go with a c/s. I ultimately figured they decided for me. There was no medical reason a c/s was needed, they also were both head down, so I decided to go for the induction. I'm very glad I did. I had a pretty uncomplicated labor and delivery (except having to get my epidural re-done). They started my drip about 9am, I wasn't progressing much, so they tried breaking my water around 5pm, then my Dr. got there around 6pm and ACTUALLY accomplished the task of breaking my water. I had my 1st epidural around 7:30-8Pm, then they had to redo it around 10pm because it wasn't working any longer. The girls were born at 2:17 & 2:45am.

Good luck! I hope everything goes smoothly for you and the babies! Hopefully you'll get good nurses...they're really the ones they get you through the process!

Congrats on having a date!! I was induced with DD. Everyone says it is so much more painful, but how was I supposed to know the difference since it was my first and I have never experienced it. Mine went great except my epi didn't work. They started pitocin at 8:30 (dialated to 2cm)....they increase it slowly every 20 minutes or so. I was pretty comfortable until they came to break my water at 11. Did that, and that is all it took. Full-blown labor started immediatly. Checked me half hour later and I was 3cm. They asked if I wanted my epi, and I said yes. Got that done, but it never took. At 2:30, I was ready to push, and bad!!!! My body was doing it automatically, and they kept telling me not to. Yeah right!!!!! I was blowing and everything, and no trying to at all, but I was anyways. At 3:13 she was born....pushing wasn't bad except I was soooo exhausted. I think I could of avoided the episotomy, but w/ every contraction her heart rate would go down (cord around her neck), and I was just out of energy....I couldn't even do her first feeding b/c I was so out of it. Once they snipped me, she flew out. Recovery went very well too, and was not nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be.

So, I am too hoping for a v-birth. The OB I have delivers them vaginally almost at all times. I think the only way he doesn't is if Baby A is breech. He has even done it when they were both transverse according to my midwife. She explained that they rarely do c-sections...even on twins. So it is very obvious that my OB is super comfortable with vaginal deliveries of twins. Of coarse every u/s, they are transverse, but we will see :)

I think you are in a wonderful position to enjoy your birth experience no matter how it turns out... you are willing to give a vag delivery a shot...and yet are accepting of the possibility of a c/s... With this attitude your "risks" for disappointment are really minimalized. If I were in your shoes I would go for vag too.. my babies didn't cooperate...but I can say I did a vag delivery of my singleton...and after the epidural it's a great experience!! I hope everything turns out well for you...that you get your vaginal delivery and are pleasantly surprised.

I think you are definitely doing the right thing in trying a vaginal delivery. Here's my story. Maybe it will help you prepare to be induced.

I went into the hospital to be induced at 37 wks. Alana (Baby A) was head down and Alexis (Baby B) was breech but had been trying to flip for two weeks. Late that night, they gave me a pill to ripen my cervix. I had contractions all night and around 5:00 AM, they checked me and gave me another pill. At 10:00, they checked me and said I was dilated to 4cm (I never needed pitocin. They offered me an epidural and I, of course, accepted! :) About 20 minutes after my epidural, my water broke. At noon, they checked me and said I was fully dilated. They didn't have an OR available (I had to deliver in an OR just in case of an emergency c/s) so I waited and dozed until 2:00. They wheeled me in there, I pushed 6 times and Alana was out. They put the u/s wand on me and Alexis had already flipped over and was ready to go. Nine minutes and six pushes later, she joined her sister. It was actually incredibly easy (if childbirth can be described that way) and I wouldn't have changed anything about it!

I know it can be really scary and uncertain, but I think you've got the right attitude. I told myself through my whole pregnancy that I wanted to deliver vaginally, but if something happened and I had to have a c/s, I wouldn't feel guilty. I think knowing that really helped a lot.

    Good luck with everything!

I think you are doing the right thing. If your babies are in good position to have a vaginal delivery then that's what you should do. C-section is major surgery and while the actual delivery is not painful the recovery is. If you can avoid that it's definitely best.

I had a c-section due to the presentation of my babies, but I would have loved to have been able to have a vaginal delivery.

Either way, healthy babies is the goal. So don't be disappointed if you do end up with a c-section, but I'm happy you are trying for the vaginal delivery.

    Good luck and Congratulations!!!

Ericka, we're in such similar situations. I've been nervous about a vaginal delivery (mostly because they are mono/di) but both girls are head down and our peri seems very confident about a vaginal. So will they do an amnio to check your boys' lungs? Our Dr. won't induce before doing an amnio, but I'm kind of nervous about that too. Not too much longer! :hug99: By the way, have you studied a little bit about labor and delivery to know what to expect?

Melissa, they have not mentioned anything about an amnio because I will be 37 weeks and since I had the steriod shots at 28 weeks apparently they are pretty sure they will be fine. I really don't know what to expect, my best friend just had her little boy and she had a vaginal delivery with a midwife and ended up pushing for 4 hours and then needed forceps. She has always been a big baby and I guess I kind of feel better after she told me it wasn't that bad. Do you think they should be testing for lung maturity at 37 weeks? What concerns me is that they are not 100% sure about my due date so I could at that time actually only be 36 weeks and 3 days. I'm not sure exactly what it is about mono/di's that make the vag delivery more risky so if you have some info I want to ask the doctors as many questions as I can, because I still can change my mind and just go c/s. Thanks so much.

Congrats on a date!! I will be doing the same thing as you if my boys will turn vertex by then.
I would try vaginal first, then c/s if necessary. Either way, I think you have a great attitude about it. I also hear that going through the birth canal is good for the babies, clears some stuff out (sorry I'm unclear as to what that "stuff" is but I think it has something to do w/them breathing easier)

I don't think most doctors do an amnio to check for lung maturity after 37 weeks, but mine does. I was just wondering if your dr. was like most of the others or not, but since you had the steroid shots I'm sure they will be fine anyway (even if you are really only 36 wks. 3 days). I know for sure how far along I am, because I know exactly which day I ovulated (based on temping, fertility monitoring, etc.), so that is not an issue for me. Basically, there is a very slight chance of acute ttts happening during delivery, but if the babies' are being monitored well, it should be caught in time. If your dr. is experienced with deliverying mono/di twins vaginally, I'm sure he knows what he's doing. :)
