My DH is a SAHD and I just lost my job because my company is most likely going under soon. I was due to go back from maternity leave next week and they actually called me and told me not to bother. I thought that was illegal, but I guess because I was out on bedrest for so long before I had the boys that my FMLA time ran out anyway. So now I have 3 kids to feed on no income! My severence is only for 6 weeks. I have a few months worth in savings, but I'm scared about how much COBRA is going to cost. I'm contemplating looking for jobs back in NY because there are probably more opportunities there than here in MD, but the thought of moving now with twin infants and a 2 year old is way too overwhelming. I'm going to apply for unemployment tomorrow. Does anyone know how you prove you have no income to qualify for WIC?

    I'm so sorry!!

I believe that any of the state programs (WIC, health insurance programs, etc.) you have to prove your income by showing your last 3 months of paycheck stubs/direct deposit bank statements. I think you can also use your tax forms from the previous year - but that obviously won't work for you. You might just call WIC, explain the situation and see what they say. If you have no income, you have nothing to bring. I'm guessing they'll ask for the previous few months stubs, though - and since you've been on leave you'd just have to tell them that.

You should look into all of the other programs out there - definitely the state health insurance program for children.

I hope you find something else soon.

I would call your local health dept (in GA where I am located, WIC is through the county health department) and ask them. They may just need some type of documentation regarding your former job. I would ask about state insurance for your kids as well as yourself. Ask what programs you qualify to apply for. Also check your state's websites for these programs and that may help. Good luck!

I am sorry you are going through this. DH was laid off recently as well. As for WIC I did a search online for the state I live in and came across the guidelines.

We just had to go through the whole WIC and FIA thing b/c Dh lost a ton of hours.

With WIC I took one paystub with me but if your no longer working you have no income so you have nothing to show.

FIA ( in michigan Family Independence Agency) where you would apply for food benefits and health care requires 30 days of pay stubs. When we applied for this they went off DH's income before he lost his hours so we didnt get much of anything. In 2 weeks I can go back b/c I will have 30 days of pay stubs and we will qualify for food benefits until DH's hours go back up again.

Both kids get medical b/c Dh's company only pays for him to have insurance.

That doesn't sound right. You took medical disability leave, right? You didn't take FMLA at the same time did you? That should be used for after. I don't think they can do that- although I'm sure there are loopholes. I would look into it.

As for WIC, you qualify. You can google it for your state and it will take you to a site and it has the income requirements. Of course w/ no income, you qualify. You need to look into other assistance as well since WIC doesn't cover everything.

So sorry you have to go through this!!

I agree with the previous posters. I went on an unpaid maternity leave while my husband was on unemployment and we had to get temporary assistance.

You should apply for WIC right away. Call your local office to find out what you need to bring. Usually it is proof of income, proof of residency and you have to take the children with you. I am not sure if you are breastfeeding or not but in my state (PA) WIC has a contract with Good Start infant formula. It use to be Similac. The good thing about WIC is that you get your checks that day and usually you get checks for a three month period (In PA)

Also, You need to check with the county assistance office. You and your family should qualify for food and medical assistance. With that, all of your doctors appointments, prescriptions, medical expenses are pretty much free of charge. You may have to pay between $1 - $3 for Rx. Make sure you get a letter for your employer stating your last date of employment or take your unemployment award letter with you. You will also need to take all of your utility bills, rent or mortgage info, car note, bank statements, phone bills, unemployment award letter (if you have it) etc.. Take all of the bills that you have. Make sure when you call you find out everything you have to take with you. If you don't you will have to come back.

You can email me if you have any more questions.
