I have a question.....

What are my chances of having twins again?? I found out on Wednesday that we are expecting again and I am now so scared that their are more than one in there. My girls are ID.

Ahhh!!! 3 more weeks until my first ultrasound, how am I going to wait???

 

Your chances are no greater than anyone else who gets pregnant. ID twins just happen, they're not genetically predisposed like fraternal twins are. Every pregnancy has roughly the same chance.

However, if you have fraternal twins, your chances of having fraternal twins again is higher than singleton pregancies... but not by much.

So, all that said, no need to stress. Having ID twins once doesn't raise your chances of twins again.

Congratulations! As others have already said, having ID twins does nothing to alter your likelihood of having twins again. We did some research on it before deciding on TTC again. I read one stat that said your chances on having a 2nd set of ID twins is only 1 in 70 000.

 

ditto above poster. They odds of conceiving two sets of id twins is about 1:70,000.

IVF is thought to slightly influence identical twinning (I have no idea if you did this or not, just thought I'd chime in). While it is true that identical twins are a fluke of nature (and sometimes called a mistake of nature when a "weak" embryo splits in half), something about the IVF process (manipulation of the embryos, etc...) tips the scales ever so slightly. It's quite interesting and my boys (and others on this site) are living proof.

There are some wild stories about identical twinning. I once read something (not specified) in the man's sperm would trigger an egg to split. Who knows? Anyhow, it must be a very slim chance to be twice so lucky as to conceive an ID set. I always jokingly tell people my zygote was too strong (not weak!) for one kid that it decided to double.

I do think the IVF manipulation story makes sense though.

Update!


The ultrasound went well, single baby is measuring 7w0d with a HB of 129bpm.

I have a small subchorionic bleed, but the doc wasn't too worried about it.

I am relieved and happy that everything looked good.
