i feel like the worst mom

owen had the flu last week. jacob has it this week. part of the symptoms has been a hefty cough. the doctor says their lungs are clear so he's not concerned. it's just phlegm that needs to clear up. today it seemed like the cough was finally on its way out.

they've also been running low fevers on and off. jacob had a fever tonight so i went to give him some tylenol drops before bed. he was lying on his back and i put the dropper in his mouth, tucked along his cheek. i've given him medicine this way before. i don't know why it went wrong tonight.

he immediately wrinkled up his face and tried to spit it out. but i guess enough got in there that he had to swallow. the medicine triggered his gag reflex and he vomited. like huge huge vomits. i had to turn him on his side. then i picked him up to comfort him and when he inhaled it sounded like either liquid or phlegm was sucked in and he started gagging again. he just kept vomiting and vomiting until his tummy was totally empty. it was everywhere. he was covered in it and i was soaked through to my bra.

and now he's upstairs trying to sleep but the cough is back. it's a rough, irritated cough and it keeps rousing him every couple of minutes.

and i feel like the worst mom in the world. i must have given him too much medicine at once, and i know they have reflux so they gag easily. i must have just been careless and now my little boy feels worse than before i tried to medicate him.


we had such a good day, too. then i went and ruined it for him.


the whole time i was rocking and comforting him, i wished someone could rock and comfort me. i just feel horrible. :cry:

 

We all have those days!! I did the same thing with my DS. I gave him Tylenol after his shots and it went down the wrong pipe and he began to choke. He got this scared look on his face while he was trying to catch his breath. That was after he had to get his shots too, as if he wasnt tramatized enough.

Hugs to you. It is so hard when they are sick and you were trying to help him and he knows that. I hope that his cough gets better!

 

One time at the pedi's office the nurse did the exact same thing to Lily with that vax they get by mouth.

You weren't careless, you are definitely not a horrible mom, and you didn't ruin your little guy's day! :hug: He's long forgotten about that funny tasting stuff that was shot into his mouth and you should, too! You were just taking care of him, that's all. I put the little dropper in my 13.5 month old's mouth today and I slipped and it went far enough back that he gagged and the whole dropper flew out of his mouth and out of my hand onto the floor. We all have things happen that we didn't, in the tiniest bit, intend to happen. Don't be so hard on yourself! I hope everyone feels better - we're going through horrible colds in our house, too.
