No! I have the Mirena! I just stepped on the scale ant it read 10lbs higher than before my mirena was inserted! I was starting to think oh god am i pregnant - I feel bloated and fat and I dont remember my last period - but I have the mirena and my obviouse pregnancy signs - bad acne and exhaustion are no where in sight. So, rather than waste money on a HPT I decided to do some online research - yes i know dangerous, but there are boards all over with people complaining of weight gain. The annoying thing is that I am working out more and eating much better than before insertion. The girs and I ran our first 5 miles together today. So what the heck? Has anyone else experienced this or am I just getting old and fat :(.

My first thought was pregnant (before I saw your subtitle!)! I'd test to make sure.

Can't hurt to test. The Mirena can move. I have already had to have one u/s to find mine.

Yeah, I can't feel the strings on mine, so I also had to have an ultrasound. It's working great according the OB, but knowing that for sure, was worth the dr. visit, KWIM?

Weight gain was one of two reasons I took my Mirena out!! I gained over 10 pounds after having it inserted and I was working out everyday and started a weight lose program. I think I made 7 months before I said ‘forget this” and had it removed. After that I dropped 40 plus pounds in four months (I was still on my weight lose plain of course), then I got pregnant with the babies LOL.
I personal think it depends on the person. Mirena has hormones just like birth control pills which I also gained weight while taking. I guess a lot of people don’t but I was not one of the lucky ones.
I might still take the pregnancy test if you are worried but I personal had the same issue and thought I would share.

How do you know it moved? Are you supposed to check for it occasionally? My dh has mentioned a couple times he could feel the strings (sorry tmi) but I dont think I would know for sure if it was in place...I have had it for 7months now and never had it checked.
BTW-I didnt gain weight from mine.

Knew it had moved b/c my OB couldn't even find it during an exam lol

I heard it does make you gain weight. I was told to check for my strings once a month. I forget and once I didn't feel them and made an appt to go in. She took one look and said "They are right there" so snooty. I told her if they were high up (sorry TMI) how could I have found them. I have since switched offices. Anyway my point is they tell you to check for the strings just in case it does move.

    thanks for all the posts
i had it checked 1 month post insertion and she couldnt find it and had to use ultrasound to find it - it had moved all the way up to the top of my uterus - dont know how they'll get it out - but she said it was in a good place, but there is no way i could find the strings. my husband cant even feel it anymore. i havent bought a test b/c i am not feeling any pg symptoms - other than big belly and seemingly bigger boobs- which could all just be from the weight gain. maybe i'll call my doc tomorrow. i am just too vain to be dealing with this weight gain. i never had this problem with the pill. :(

I am having my mirena removed and tubal ligation in a couple of months - CAN"T WAIT... i have gained so much weight after the Mirena was inserted and I have not changed a single thing with exercise and eating. There is also evidence of horrendous mood swings and terrible acne with the Mirena for some women... I just want the damn thing out.... Don't like having it at all.... GL - I hope you find some answers... I am just lucky i suppose that we are happy with our family of 4 and I am happy with the decision for a tubal ligation.

have you checked the "strings" since you had it put in? Mine came dislodged and I ended up having it removed and went on the pill... well I was never good with the pill and now look! I have twins!!! I will say that I didn't get pregnant when it got dislodged, but it can happen. I attend a local breastfeeding support group with a woman who had the Mirena IUD and was feeling"off" she went to the doctor because she could not figure out what was wrong... Well, she was 12 weeks pregnant!! SO, go to the dollar store and get a test! Good Luck!
