I don't understand pull-ups

So we haven't started real potty training yet, but we have all the equipment, and the boys are having a great time sitting on the potties every chance they get. They LOVE going up there, but they have yet to actually produce anything. I figure they are getting used to the idea and enjoying themselves, which is good.

Problem is, every time they want to sit up there, I have to take off the diaper and put it back on afterwards, so it's becoming a real chore. They also really do not like laying on the table for changes anymore (total flailing screaming fits). So I was thinking it might be easier for everyone to put them in pull-ups, or use those Pampers Easy-Ups (which I think are like diapers that you can pull-up, but with tear-off sides??).

Anyway, my question is: Would putting them in pull-ups confuse them? I'm afraid when the day comes to put them in underwear, they might not really know the difference between underwear and the pull-up. Is this why some people don't like to use pull-ups? I was thinking it might be a different case since we are not really in all-out training yet.

As a side note - how long will it be before they actually do something on the potty? Is it normal that they like to sit on it for a few weeks before they actually pee??

We didn't do pull-ups long (like 1/2 a box) but I liked them during the transition. I wanted to just be DONE with regular diapers so once we were out of them that was it for us. We switched to pull-ups and then only when we were taking along car ride, and at first for sleep, until they stopped requesting it.

That said, our preschool was anti-pull-up thinking they send a mixed message, but I didn't care (didn't really see where it was their decision to make).

I have only PTd Sofia since Ryan has no interest. I only used pull-ups over her underwear at night and I just stopped that last night. Our never really fought diaper changes so I had no motivation to try the pull-ups before.

I am in the midst of potty training so take my advice with a grain of salt. I know lots of people do not like Pull-ups, but I personally love them. My kids can pull them up and down while they are learning without me having to be there each and everytime. We started with a potty seat that fit on the real toilet, but it was taking ALL day to get them in and out of there, diaper on and off, etc. So instead I bought the little potties, let them wear pull ups, socks and sweatshirts and they go freely to the potty whenever they want or I remind them. It's worked great so far. If they have a poopy accident you can easily tear the sides to take it off. I bought the BOON potty seat from BRU that has the built in toilet paper roll and wipes holder. It's fantastic because of those holders and also because it looks like a stepstool instead of having too blatant pottys in your kitchen. lol.

I am using pull-ups with Bea right now. Going to underwear-only didn't quite work for us, but she still wants to go potty. So, pull-ups are a good compromise for us.

I read a great tip on this forum, which I discovered when I was looking for info on PTing twins. Someone said that she would put the pull-up over the real underwear. That way the kid gets the wet feeling to reinforce training, but there is no mess. I adapted that to use only when we were going out somewhere (so just undies in the house), because it is a real PITA to deal with an accident at the store that wets the whole outfit, but you can just change the undies and toss the pull-up. I also used them overnight (still over the undies) during training. Otherwise, I found them too similar to diapers, even those "feel wet" ones don't feel wet enough to kids.
