Has anyone done this before? I feel like a VERY BAD mommy!! The poor thing, her finger is bleeding and sore. I put some polysporin on it but she won't let me anywhere near it to get a bandaid on (although I think the bleeding has stopped anyway). Does anyone have any other suggestions about how to treat it?

I do it to William ALL the time! I refuse to cut them now, my mom does it for me. What you did is fine. She'll be fine. I know you feel horrible I did too when I cut William

My post partum doula suggested that I file my boys' nails rather than cut (easier on both of us!). I started when they were very little and still do it at 10 months of age. I happened to have a few of those mini nail files they have in hotels and they work great. Their nails are so soft and flaky at this age, they file off very easily. Admittedly, the boys aren't terribly patient, but it works just fine. I'd recommend it to anyone over cutting.

I am guilty for this as well....doesn't make you feel all worm and fuzzy inside when it happens. The file is a good idea though. I personally haven't clipped them since I did it that once, but I have also bought an angled pair of clippers....that helps me out.

I don't think there is a kid alive who hasn't been cut while getting nails done! Filing is a little more low risk. Don't bother with bandaids though.. they can suck those little things off and be a choking hazard. As long as the bleeding has stopped and there's still some finger left :hush: I think I would just leave it alone. If you're breastfeeding, you can put some breastmilk on it to help it heal, but otherwise just leave it be!

I just clip the side of their nails (I cut Alice EVERY time I trimmed her nails) and then pull it off. Alice's thumbnails lay flat so it is a total pain, at least this way I'm not making her bleed.

I've done it too! Don't worry, they get over it much faster than we do :(

Mine are 3 months and I did this to DD just last week! I clipped the very tippy top of her finger all the way across because she jerked her finger as I clipped. I felt awful! She bled for like 15 minutes and I bandaid-ed it. It was red for a couple of days but it's all better now. Her nails need to be trimmed again and now I'm so scared I'll hurt her again!

And to make matters worse she is such a drama queen. She has a set of lungs on her and if you even look at her wrong she sets off wailing.

Oh my goodness, yes, I have done it. Poor little Allison got it from me...it was late and stupid me didn't have enough light and I was trimming her little nails and I cut it so bad she just bled and bled. I cried like a baby! She was so tee tiny and just cried when I did it. I didnt put a bandaid on her because she was so little, but it healed fine. It makes you feel like poop though.

I haven't done it-but that's because I pick their nails, or I just clip the side like becasquared does, and pull it off. Annabella won't let me get a nail clip anywhere near her anyways! You are not alone! Clipping nails is like wrestling with pigs in mud over here!

I cut my Lincoln. He bled all over dad. He was only a few months old. A lot of my family was there to see. I felt terrible. It happens. He doesn't hate having his nails trimmed anymore than his brother.

I have done that before and now I just let their nails grow wild. I am hoping to get them into the Guinness book of World Records someday.

JK - I will occasionally file them to keep their talons in check because they just squirm around too much to use clippers. Someone told me I should cut their nails while they're sleeping but I never want to mess with sleep (it is sacred) so I haven't actually tried that. As you can see, many mommies have cut their LOs before whilst attempting to trim their nails so don't worry - you are not a bad mommy!!

Yep, I did it too. And then DH said, let me show you...and he did it too. So I filed sharp edges to about 12 weeks, then started cutting while she was breastfeeding and content (have the palm facing you, makes it easier to see that the pad is clear of the clippers). But I have to have DH hold her leg so I can do the toenails.

BIG hugs to you! I totally understand as I did the very same thing to my DD and I felt awful after. She cried, obviously, and I told her I was sorry and it was a mistake but it didnt make me feel any better. Í sucked her finger, that was my first instinct, and then wrapped it in a towel soaked with cold water. I think I disinfeted it and put a plaster on once the bleeding slowed. She recovered quickly and doesnt remember but I do!!!

    Hugs, we´ve all been there!
