I Am In Miserable Pain

I weaned the babies (big girls now I guess :0) on Sept 15. The day before I weaned I got my monthly menstrual migraine which typically lasts one day. I am on day 7 of a bad headache & unrelenting nausea. I can't find anything searching the web, but I am wondering if weaning the babies after over 3 years of breastfeeding has affected my hormones & is causing this hideous headache. I had to call dh home early from work on Tuesday because I could not care for the girls - between vomiting every 15 minutes & the horrible head pain I just couldn't cope (very unusual for me since I HATE to admit defeat). Has anyone else suffered from headaches after weaning?

(I hope this won't be moved to the breastfeeding forum because most mommies there have not been through weaning yet.)

Thanks to anyone who can give me any information.

I don't have personal experience with this (I quit BF at 5 weeks postpartum, so my hormones were still screwed up from the birth anyway), but it sounds awful. Have you called your doctor? He/she might not even know why it's happened, but it seems like a shot of demerol or something might be in order. I don't think I would endure a week of horrible pain and nausea without winding up in the ER.

I have hormonal migraines and yes they got worse when I started my periods back up. My periods unfortunately came back while breastfeeding so I can't help you there. The migraines have gotten worse since childbirth. I get one around ovulation and then get killer ones before and during my period. Since I'm ttcing agin I can't take Maxalt which usually knocks mine out. Now that you aren't breastfeeding you might want to try taking some migraine medicine. I had to take Tylenol #3 for my migraines while bf my son since my periods resumed while breastfeeding him. I eventually had to quit breastfeeding him because of the pain. It does suck to have one and try to care for your children.

I hate to say this, but it sounds like you could have mastitis. Is there a red rash on your breasts? The nausea and headache are definitely symptoms. I would see about getting an abx right away to clear it up! I hope you feel better soon!

I thought of that, but I have very little breast pain & no fever so I think mastitis is ruled out. I am so nauseous & throw up so often it would be really hard to take abx right now anyway. I have a long history of migraines, which mercifully disappeared during the pregnancy & for past 3 years - they just started back about 2 months ago when my menstrual cycle became more regular. I am probably going to have to call the GYN if this doesn't stop soon.

I have menstrual migraines. They've gotten better. What works for me is at the first twinge of a migraine, I take 1 Excedrin. If I can't take it till the headache has started, I still take just 1 Excedrin. Two makes me dizzy. If the migraine keeps coming, I'll take a 2nd Excedrin 2 hours later. I also started taking Seasonale. It's the bc pill where you only get a period every 3 months. I figured I could handle a migraine every 3 months vs. every month. The migraines have lessened the longer I've been on Seasonale. I didn't get to nurse for very long so I don't know if weaning would cause that.

I cannot empathize with you since I can count on my hands how many headaches I've had in my entire 30-years of life, but I am sorry you are suffering to the point of having to ask your husband to come home and care for your girls. I say this because I know how much you treasure your time with them, and I know how strong you are both physically and mentally. I hope that you contact your doctor and get some relief soon. Please keep us posted.

Oh boy ... I haven't weaned my guys yet, but good ol' AF came back a few months ago with wicked menstrual migraine headaches. Excedrine Migraine taken right when they start, with a cappucino or coffee or some Dew, helps tame them. I hate to think what will happen when they get weaned completely ... big hugs to you, I hope you find something that works for you.

I have decided to see the doctor tomorrow. I am going to ask him to do some hormone testing & see if I can't get some relief. I have had it with this pain & nausea!

Did you get to see a dr today?
My headaches have actually gotten better since before I was pregnant....or maybe now that I am a Mama I have discovered that the headaches I thought were killers were nothing compared to mothering these 3! Hahaha! Just kidding I had debilitating headaches in hs and college and they were the worst during my period. I would vomit, pass out, sleep for 3 days, etc....
I hope you can get some relief from the dr.

I saw a PA on Friday...basically she had no idea what was wrong with me so she decided it would be best to treat my symptoms with Tylenol 3 & phenergan & see if I get the same symptoms with my menstrual cylce next month. it was just a guess, but she didn't think weaning would cause a dramatic change in my hormones so quickly. My headache finally went away on Saturday...but the nausea is lingering. If I get anything remotely like this again, I will see the GYN, insist on hormonal testing & have him do bloodwork to make sure I don't have an infection of any kind.

As far as being PG - that would be a dream come true for me...but I had a HUGE period from Friday to Thursday...not likely anything is left in utero! Also, my girls are IVF babies....I had a high FSH (low ovarian function) which is probably even lower now, 4 years after the test was done.

Thanks for checking back with me - that was one painful, miserable week. the worst thing....the nausea & vomiting didn't even cause me to lose weight since I felt like I had to eat a lot to stave off the nausea :(.
