I am confused about weight gain w/ high BMI

Discussion in 'Pregnancy Help' started by BlessedThistle, Mar 1, 2009.

My peri said if I do not gain any, that will be a good thing. But Dr Luke seems to think I should gain 35 lbs? My BMI is 39 - I recently lost 18 lbs. Is there a happy medium in there? What were you advised to do if you are a Woman of Fluff?

My BMi is 39 too and my OB said that he want me to gain 25 lb the max is 30lb with twins.
but he said that he want me not to gain anithing until 12 weeks. I start gain weight from 10 weeks and so far I gained 11lbs. ( I am 20 weeks)

neither my OB or my Peri have said much about weight gain. My OB basically said that what I gain is what I gain. I'm almost 22 weeks and have gained (based on my OB calculations) 19lbs. I say that it is 10 lbs more.

  3. Thanks scorpion....so far I have made it to 6 wks and dropped a couple of lbs...I will try to also get to 12 without gaining.

My OB hasn't said much, other than, "your weight is fine".... However, I too started this pregnancy overweight. My BMI was 28. I am 18 weeks and have gained 7 pounds. It isn't like I am not eating all day, cause I am, just not putting the weight on as fast as I did with my previous pregnancy. I have read that you don't want a huge gain in the first trimester, but pack more on in the second. So, good luck! Just do what you can, your body will adjust!

I don't know what my BMI was but both the OB and peri recommended against gaining more than 30 lbs...I didn't gain any weight until I was over 28 wks pregnant - and I only gained 27 lbs from 28 to 36 wks when I delivered...

I started my pregnancy overweight as well. I think my BMI was 31 ish. I forgot exactly. The OB wanted me to gain 30-40 lbs. I thought she was insane. I have gained about 30lbs since the beginning. I am almost 33 weeks so I don't think the number is going to go up anymore than 5lbs. I am being very careful about buying sweets and other empty calorie foods. My sweet tooth surprisingly is 50% better since pregnancy. I could overeat so many rich and delicious sweets and had cravings for them. Now, I may eat something sweet but I am not eating sweets as a meal. My girls went CRAZY whenever I have had tiramisu, so that is out. I try to make sweets that aren't too bad like rice krispy treats. I do have a new habit of drinking juice (from concentrate). I know it is horrible for my teeth but as of yet, I can't kick the habit. I used to drink plain water 24/7, now it is juice and water.
My friends were shocked at how good I look pregnant. Due to my sweet tooth, they ALL agreed that I was going to get huge. I proved them wrong. he he

  7. embarazada, I was lucky that my sweet tooth really lessened in the last couple of months. Sometimes I wonder if that is how I finally am staying pregnant this time. I am very grateful!

I don't know what my BMI was when I got pregnant, I would guess around 29 or 30. I gained a total of 17 lbs with my pregnancy. My twins were born at 36w3d and weighed 5lbs and 5.8lbs ...

You really don't NEED to gain 30 & 40 lbs ... I actually weighed LESS after I gave birth (and the bloating went away) than I did when I got pregnant. I guess because I had extra weight, the babies took what they needed from me.

When you say Dr Luke, is that the person with the Twins, Triplets and Quads book? I don't think you need to follow that word for word ... just eat healthy and enough ...

I have no idea what my BMI is/was, but during my pregnancy, I actually lost 30 pounds until about 29 weeks when I started gaining. With the pre-eclampsia, I went into my c-section weighing 30 pounds more than my pre-pregnancy weight, and within a week I was down 60 pounds. My OB never was concerned about my weight, just how the babies were growing.

I really should start eating more fruits and vegetables again though.

My weight gain increased once I was sedentary. Not by choice of course but I took time off of everything since January. No work/school. I think that is why the doc never put me on bedrest. I put myself on house rest. I just got too big and started getting cramps when I would be out and about. My hunger has increased significantly towards the end of my pregnancy. I now make heavier food choices like cottage cheese, soy meat substitutes and yogurt. Before, I was able to get by with more carbs and fruits. After waking up in the middle of the night hypoglycemic, I decided to eat heavier dinners or a snack with protein for dinner (I am a smoothie queen). Before, I would just eat a bowl of cereal. I have Dr. Luke's book. Gaining that much weight was not going to happen for me. My health is my priority then the babies. I plan on joining WW a month after I deliver the girls. I read they have a program for breastfeeding moms.
