Hi there. My one DS learned to sit then kneel then stand. As a result he has no trouble falling to his bum when he is standing. My other son, however, learned to sit and stand within about 36 hours of each other. As a result, when he is done standing, he just lets go of what ever he is holding and launches, of course resulting in a big bump on the head. How do i teach him to flex his knees and sit?

    TIA!

I know what you're going through, Riley learned how to stand and fall within a week (with many knots on her head). Skylar finally learned how to stand but freaks out after a few minutes because she doesn't know how to get down. She's almost getting the hang of it but not quite yet.

We are going through the same thing right now. Our PT comes today and I was planning to ask her this. If she has a good suggestion I will post it back on here. Other than showing them what to do, I don't know. I don't remember with my oldest what we did. [IMG]

I had to show my oldest what to do. It took many repititions before he "got it". Other than that I wouldn't know what to do either! [IMG]

Sorry I didn't post this yesteday. The PT came and I asked her about this because we are having the same problem. She said to have them stand holding onto something and you sit behind them and place your thigh where they would sit back on it. Then slowly bring them back to your thigh as if they were sitting, using their legs to do the work. Then when they don't resist anymore you could try lowering them to your calf, which is usually lower than your thigh. After that seems to work you can lower them to the floor in a sitting position. This would obviously be done over several days. But be sure their legs are doing the work. This will help teach them to get down.

We practiced it yesterday and I did notice my DS last night was trying to get down and was putting his hand down to help him, but he still wasn't sure, then he just plopped down.

Just wanted to post her suggestion.

Hi there. I spoke to our PT as well and she gave me the same suggestion. I tried it and after the first day he began to lose the fear. Now 3 days later, he still gets excited and "leads with his head" but is falling to his bum about 70% of the time and getting better at catching himself the other 30%.

Thanks for your followup post and it is nice to know that something that feels really hard can actually be ok.
