We're no where near buying things yet since I'm so early and we want to wait and make sure things progress well. But how do you plan for things (like eventual daycare for instance) when you have no idea when they'll arrive? I hope to make it to Dec 11th which would be 38wks. As far as the items like cribs, etc those we'll need no matter when they arrive, but what about clothes for instance? Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated!
Well I haven't delivered yet so I don't have all the answers. All I can say, is get the nursery and the things you want to be involved in choosing done before 30 weeks. You will probably be too uncomfortable to do much running around after that. I hit the sale racks as soon as I found out I was PG but I knew I was having 2 girls thanks to IVF & PGD. I was able to buy last summer's clothes in the fall as they were on clearance. I kept receipts and tags on everything until just recently. Then I made large registry lists more for my own reminder of the things I wanted to get. After my baby shower, I went back and bought the things other people hadn't. I did buy the must haves - 2 car seats, a double snap n go and 2 cribs early so I could relax and know we could sleep them and get them home no matter what.
I agree that you should do things early. You have no idea if you will end up on bed rest or having complications. So I would definitely do things between weeks 25 and 30. I went on bed rest at 29 weeks and did not have any clothes washed, nothing put away etc. I had to have my mom come over and do all of that. And I was totally bummed because that is something I wanted to do myself. I wish I had started earlier.
Hit the twin sales early in your area. Not only will you save $$ but you'll meet lots of other MOMs and get some great advice. -Beth
Thank you for your replies! Great ideas too. I was thinking of joining the local MoM's group. Although I just missed one for their sales. Oh well, I'll be on the hunt! Thanks again! Casey
Mine were close to six lbs when they were born and were swimming in the NB size for about 3 weeks and then started growing into them. Gerber make a just born size that is really great for when they first come home. If they are going to be born in late fall early winter I would get a lot of footed sleepers and onsies to go underneath. My boys lived in those. I really wouldn't buy a whole bunch of "outfits" IMO they are a waste of money (maybe a couple for pictures) I never wanted to dress them in things that didn't look comfortable. Then just buy a few things in each size, for as much as I wanted to be prepared I also couldn't stop buying them things after they were born, so you can kind of get things as you go too. As for a shower, people LOVE buying newborn clothes so that's what we got the most of so I took some of it back and exchanged it for bigger sizes. As far as everything else, the internet was my best friend. I looked up cribs and nursery stuff and all of the baby stuff that I wanted and did all of my registering and ordering on line. I do agree about getting things done early, I had one of my showers at 31 weeks and was so out of breath I could barely open my gifts  . Plus you will feel better if everything is done and taken care of.
I am just trying my best to have a little of everything to start with.. then will buy more if needed. I have started buying some preemie (I have had both small and big babies) mostly because my girls are measuring pretty small for their gestation, some newborn and some 0-3. I am way behind in shopping though.. Its not easy to get out and shop anymore so I should have done this a few weeks ago when I felt better. I just ordered my crib bedding, carseats, stroller and co sleeper online friday night. I am also enjoying having everything delivered to my front door. LOL
Congrats on your twin pregnancy! Get going to those massages now!!! I´ve had terrible back problems and wish I had gone to get a massage sooner! I agree with ppl when they say to have things pretty much ready for the 30 week mark. I went into pre-term labour at 31 weeks but the doctors were able to stop the birth, luckily. Im 35w1d now and still pg! I didnt start buying anything until after Christmas, in January, when I was about 18 wks along, so I took advantage of the sales. What I did buy was furniture online and got it delivered to my house. I got heavy pretty quickly so it got hard for me to get out and about. We bought 2 cotbeds (cots that can be later used as beds) to save money later on. The bedding I bought will also come in useful then too, so I dont feel bad about buying sheets that Im not going to use immediately. I wouldnt bother with bumpers. I have 2 and am not sure Im ever going to use them... We also had a large wardrobe made with the idea of long-term use. It´s divided into 3 parts, each twin having his & her own area to hang clothes with removable shelves underneath (i.e. as the clothes get longer, they can hang them ok by removing the shelves) and the 3rd part being just shelves. Under, there are 6 small drawers. I also bought a changer dresser, with drawers, which can be used later on as a normal surface to put things on. I tried to buy thinking a few years ahead otherwise you end up spending a fortune. We also bought the Mountain Double Urban pram which holds up to 60kg (approx 130 lbs). We live in a block of flats so its impossible to find any twin pram that fits in our tiny lift, so we have the problem of having to leave the pram in the car each time we want to go out. (We have direct access to the garage luckily). We have the carrycots for up to 6 months, and the normal seats for 6 months+ I would buy cheap newborn/preemie clothes as they will grow out of it all so fast. Also think of the season when buying clothes. When I went and bought stuff, I bought 6 months+ as most people will give you newborn and 0-3 month as gifts. Buy bibs that have velcro too. Dont buy clothes with loads of buttons as I have got! I have the disadvantage of not speaking from experience, as my babs havent been born yet, but hopefully I´ll get on here afterwards and give you some feedback! It is difficult to know exactly what you need but I would buy the basics as you can always buy more once they´re born. The internet was also my great friend! There are also some great mums here who can help you from their experiences too.
