After 20 weeks, the distance is measured in centimeters from the pubic bone to up over the top of the uterus. At 20 weeks your top of uterus should be at the belly button. +\- 4cm. With twins everything is messed up anyway. I measured more than I was. Confirmed with US-----twins. Uterus stretched out more. Growth US always more accurate.

Once you start to show your doctor will measure you at your visits. Just ask him/her what the measurement was when they do it. Or you could ask them if they could measure you now just to see.

You really can't measure if you don't have a belly. Your uterus has to be popping out when you're lying down flat.
