How to keep the diaper champ from smelling?

We bought a diaper champ b/c it uses regular trash bags. I have an air freshener in the bottom of it. Does anyone have any tricks to keep it from smelling so bad besides replacing the bag every day?

I keep a box of baking soda nearby and about once a day I sprinkle some fresh baking soda on top of the diapers until the can is ready to be emptied. When I put a new bag in the can I also sprinkle a bit of baking soda at the bottom before putting any diapers in,

I don't use a diaper champ anymore (and they are three and need to be potty trained, but don't get me started on that one!), but with our regular lidded cheap can the baking soda works.

Ours doesn't smell because I trained my kids to poop at daycare. Seriously - they all poop there! But on weekends, when they poop, since they're on solids, their poop sort of peels off. I take toilet paper, peel the poop out of the diaper and into the toilet and flush it away. When I don't feel like doing that, I just take the diaper to the outside garbage right away or wrap it in a used Target bag.

    LOVE IT!!!!! :rotflmbo:

Wish my kids went to daycare!!!
Just so you know, mine stinks and I can't seem to stop it permanently. I spray al ittle febreez in it which seems to help for a short time.

For poopy diapers I bag them in the scented disposable diaper bags before placing in the diaper champ. We take it out daily. Also use Febreeze when needed.

Whenever I empty my can, I spray lysol into the entire can, plus into the little swivel portions. Mine doesn't really smell...maybe a little when you move the handle while putting in a diaper, but other than that, I never smell it.

We wipe it down with disinfectant wipes every time we change the bag. We also leave it outside overnight once in a while to air out. But it still does stink (though I don't remember it stinking really bad until my girls were at least a year old and eating a lot of solid foods).

We actually just got rid of our Champ because we have one girl finally trained (hooray!) except for nighttime, but that's only one diaper a day. Now we just put diapers in a small open trash can and dump them in the big trash at the end of every day. Also, we transfer most poops to the toilet (other than the really soft ones), so there isn't much poop left on the diaper.

We do this too, and it works pretty well. The only time we smell it is when we put a dirty diaper in and flip the lid some stink escapes, and only then when the bag is starting to get full and needs to be changed. If we start to smell it, we change the bag, and spray it all down, and we're good to go for another couple of days.

Might be the trash bags you use. Mine only smells for 30 seconds when I turn the handle, otherwise we can't smell a thing... it's in our bedroom even.

Make sure you are putting the bag totally inside the champ when it is closed, don'tlet it peek out at all or smell escapes. Also I needed to change the seal on it once. You can get them from the company for free if I remember correctly. You have to disassemble the top to do this but it is not hard to do.

We also do this at every bag change. Oh and we no longer keep it in the nursery. I didn't want my babies sleeping near stinky diapers, so we've moved our champ into the master bathroom.

As a mother of 5 I have changed at least 10,000 poopy diapers! I feel that all diaper pails suck! What is the point if you have to change the bag daily? I think it is less work to just put the diapers in a grocery bag and toss them into the garage. I put them all in a can when I leave the house! And since I keep my garage door closed, nobody knows my dirty little secret!

I want to ditto this!!! easier to use that grocery bag and throw it every night than clean a diaper pail or genie!

same here. the only time we're really overwhelmed with the smell is when we open it to change the bag. but we can fill that sucker up without stink escaping. we did stop using grocery bags, though. we use the glad forceflex bags that we use for our regular kitchen garbage. maybe the heavy duty plastic contains the smell better.

my thoughts exactly! we've used all kinds and none of them change the fact that poop stinks! :p we just started tying them up in plastic grocery sacks and tossing them outside in the big trash can... the trash is taken at least twice a week and it's not been too much of an issue for us... we even spend every sunday outside, so if it was that bad, we would've noticed by now :)
my MIL puts them in ziplocs and is able to put them in the inside trash when she watches them... she'll load up to 3 or four in a gallon bag and swears by it... i'm too cheap, so i'll stick with the free grocery bags :)
