I know I have read post about how you got rid of the binkies, but I was not ready at that time. Now my girls are 20 mos today and I can't stand them anymore....They seem to be getting more and more attached. Did anybody cut the nipple or was it cold turkey? How did it go? How much crying? How long did it take? Did they loose a lot of sleep? I really really want them gone!!!! Anyway I would love your in put on how you all did it and some encouragement because I know this will be rough!! [IMG]

    Thanks,
    Michelle

    You have a few options:

Binky Fairy - leave the binky's under the pillow and they wake up with a gift

Binky's for Babys - take them to the nursery and give them to the nursery for the new babies

Slowly Weaning - For every sleep without the binky, they get a few M&Ms

Legal Tender - Take them to the store, explain to the cashier that they are money to be used for a big kid present. They pitch them, and they walk out with a big kid gift! We did this with my youngest DS (he was over age 3) and he did ask for his 'mimi' (still does every now and again), but he is just fine!

Our boys used them all time around 9months we only allowed them to have them when they were in their cribs or when we were in the car driving.... After a while they tossed them on the floor under the cribs and we just left them..... They are still laying in there just in case I guess but they have no intrest anymore and are doing just fine.

    I did the cutting thing.

It worked instantly for Boyd and for Brody, it took about a week of snips, and at that point, I took it away.

It was hard. But Brody was waking us up at least 5 times during the night looking for his paci. I think it was around 14 months.

We went cold turkey and it was very smooth. They took longer to fall asleep but in 3 days it was back to normal. NO screaming or fighting. BUT, they always has blankies as well for comfort so it wasn't so bad on them...

Thanks guy, My girls have doggies( stiffed animals) they sleep with...So hopefully it will be as smooth as prettybaby25.

Cutting the binkies means snipping the tip off the nipple so they can no longer suck on them. Hopefully they will loose interest

We just did it at Thanksgiving (29 months old) and it was so much easier than I thought! We had them give them to their new cousin Baby Michael. We talked about it for a week prior to the exchange. AT the time, they were LOVING Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. So we bought 2 Mickey dolls and they gave Michael the pacifiers and he gave them Mickey.
The first night, Emma was sad and we talked about that being ok. She rubbed Mickey's head to fall asleep. No crying, no whining, nothing! The next day after nap she said, "Oh my goodness Mommy! Baby Michael has our pacifiers. I want them back." I explained that they are his now and we have Mickey. Haven't heard a word about pacifiers since!
I was a little worried that they would be mad at Baby Michael but we saw him on Monday and they were fine.

    Good luck!

Mine traded theirs in for Thomas trains at 2 years old. They were only getting them in the crib or on long car trips. We did it one afternoon after nap and they went to sleep that night with no problem. They didn't nap for about 4 days after that, but they haven't asked for them since. HTH [IMG]

Ok - this is going to sound really weird, but it worked for us with our singleton and the twins (and it started out as a fluke).

When my oldest was two, we told her she couldn't have a binky when she turned three (yes, we let her have a binky until she was 3!). When she kept asking why, why, why, why, in frustration I just blurted out that "it's against the law for three year olds to have binkys. The policemen take your binky's when you turn three and give it to new babies." And it just made total sense to her (God Bless her!). One day, she just gave me the binky and said "give it to the policeman so he can give it to a new baby." And that was that.

So, this summer we told the same thing to the twins and my oldest told them it was true and that she gave her binky to a policeman to give to a new baby. So, they said they would do it too.

Well, one day about two weeks before they turned three, my neighbor happened to have a friend visiting who was a policeman (total coincidence that he was over in full uniform - no kidding!). So, I ran over and said "you are going to think I am nuts, but here's the story...and I told him the whole story about my oldest. He laughed his butt off and said, "ok - have them come over here". So, I got the twins to get their binkys...they walked over to him and hid behind my leg but he said how important it was that big girls stop using binkys and give them to new babies who really need them. Reluctantly Ava handed hers over. Hannah, not wanting to be out done by Ava, gave hers to him too. By this time, we had all the neighbors outside watching and taking pictures!! This cop, who was just soo sweet and nice and really a good sport, took the binkys and put them in his car and then opened his trunk up (which was full of toys, which I thought was VERY odd, but he later explained they keep toys in the trunk so when the have to take kids out of a home during domestic disputes, they can give the kid a toy so the experience is less traumatizing) anyway, he opened the trunk up and gave them puzzles and dinosaur figures. They were SOOO excited to get the toys and have the neighbors clapping for them that they didn't cry!!

The next 4-6 nights were kind of rough....they cried and said they didn't want babies to have their binky's anymore, but eventually they just stopped crying! To this day, they love to see the picture of them with the policeman and when they see a baby with the same kind of binky they had, they ask me if the policeman gave that baby their binky (which I always say "yes" to and tell them how nice it was to maek that baby soo happy!).

So, a very goofy way we did it indeed, but it worked for us!!! Good luck with it!

Well, we tried once when the girls were about 14 months, but it didn't work. Then, after they were 2 we had some family come stay with us for a while and they had a 18 month old who didn't use one. When the girls started to play with him and realized how he didn't need one, they ended up going to bed without it one night and from then on we left them alone. It has been wonderful every since. We don't have to take out special time to find paci's before going out. What a wonderful life!

Janet, what a great story! That is so cute! [IMG] And what a great stroke of luck that the police officer had toys in his trunk - amazing!

Nathan was my binky boy when he was about 2 1/2 we brought him to Build a Bear Workshop and made a "binky bear" he stuffed his binkies in the bear. I envisioned waking up at 2am to stuffing all over the room and Nathan happily sucking his binky, but he went to bed no tears! It was a very smooth transition and he never cried for it once.
