I need some advice on how to carry formula on the plane and what others have done...

I know that TSA will allow you to fly with the amt that you need as long as you declare it when going thru security BUT my question is do you make it ahead of time, if so do you then bring an ice pack to keep it cold and then how do you warm it in the airport or on the plane when you need it???

I was thinking I would put the powdered formula in the bottles and then bring a bottle of water with me in the diaper bag so that I could mix it on the spot.... BUT I don't know if tsa would let me bring the bottle of water... I guess I could buy it at the gate but it's going to be like 5am so I don't think anything will be open that early besides the usual McDonals and Burger king that wont have water bottles...

OK what Im REALLY asking is HOW Do you handle formula feedings when travelling on a plane and through the airport...

Thanks so much I'm totally lost here....

At our airport in NY they won't let you bring bottled water through the security check but once you are on the other side where the gates for the departures are, you can buy water or food there that they allow you to take on the plane. So don't bring it with you. They will most likely confiscate it. Put the powder in the bottles ahead of time. Also, you can always get bottled water on the plane. I was really lucky when we went. The flight attendant heated the bottles for us in hot water. It was very nice of them, especially since they had to do it times 2 ;) If your babies are used to room temperature formula then you are very lucky and it will make things that much easier. GL and fun on your trip!

Just wanted to add that when they were little, we used these for travel http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2736618 . They have 3 seperate sections that you can measure ahead of time with the forumula amount and then it easily pours into the bottle. It allows you to have up to three feedings per container so you only have to carry one bottle for each on the plane. Just another idea I thought I'd throw out there. My girls usually only drank RTF formula (which is another option if they make your kind of formula in the travel size cans. They let you take those on the planes as long as they have not been opened).

ETA: McDonalds and Burger King both sell bottled water!

What about if you bought a bottle of the ready to feed formula just for this instance. Then you can just open that bottle and pour when you are ready to feed them. No worries about finding bottled water and mixing on the plane. If you can, I would get them to drink on takeoff and landing. I have heard it will help with any pressure problems in their ears.

What we've done is measure out powdered formula in the bottles ahead of time and then bring a couple of extra bottles too. Then after you get through security buy a couple bottles of bottled water and mix the bottles you'll need for take-off. Depending on the length of the flight you might be able to mix bottles for descent too since its easier to mix bottles in an airport than on the plane itself (especially if your kids are on your laps). GL and have a safe trip.

All the ideas are correct. I used to be a supervisor for TSA. Make sure you declare the formula and take it out of your bag ahead of time. You will be able to get water on the flight. There is always bottled water everywhere. Even at 5am in an airport. Good Luck!!

Ditto to the pp about the ready to feed formula. It makes things much easier when you are holding a baby instead of pouring out the powdered formula and then measuring the water.

waht i've done is prepare four bottles, already mixed and very cold. Declare them at security; i just flew across country and had no problem. Then either make more bottles on the plane (pour the powder when the babies are quiet/napping so you don't have to when they are HUNGRY and have the flight attendants fill the bottles or use water that you've purchased. Unless you're taking a very long flight you shouldn't need more than two or three feedings, yes? then you can buy water as soon as you land and make more bottles.

I used those tripartite formula measurer things as well - teh first time i flew i put the formula pre-measured in ziplock bags; boy was THAT a disaster with a wriggly baby in my arms!

Also, IF possible, try to time it so they are eating when you descend; the sucking will help their ears.
    Good luck!
