My babies are 6 and a half months old and havent even begin to master sitting up. Mason is stronger and can hold himself just a little, but Gracie is like a rag doll and doesnt even attemp to try and do it. I am growing a little concerned!! When I tok them for their 6 onth check up a week ago he asked if they were sitting upa dn I told him no--He replied not to worry to remember their corrected age was just 4 and a half months old and they would catch up, but Im still worried. Ive been rading other posts and others seem to be sitting up around 6 months old, but I cant see mine doing it for a while!!!

My girls showed no signs of sitting up at 6 months were to busy crawling backwards then the day they turned 7 months out of the blue they both sat up

Mine are going on 7 months. Within the past day or so my daughter can stay seated for a minute or so - depending on how much she wants to move, She's usually trying to reach for something else that throws her balance off and she ends up back on her tummy where she is perfectly happy. My son can still only do it for a couple seconds. But it depends on their position too. If we lean tham way forward and have their hands down, they can balance longer - and isn't this only what's expected of them for awhile at first anyway? I was a little worried too, but I think back to everything else I thought they seemed to take awhile to get (like smiling, rolling, laughing) and now I can't remember them not being able to do those things. Everything happens so fast, one day you're worried and the next they're practically an expert! I'm sure they'll get there soon and then you'll forget you were even worried about it.

At 6 months M could sit if we sat her up, but she couldn't get into or out of that position (well aside from just falling backwards!). A was NO WHERE near sitting. By 9 months both could sit and A could get herself into and out of it. By 9 1/2 months M could finally get into and out of sitting by herself.

My girls were almost 8 months before they sat up completely on their own. I thought they would never do it!!

    It can literally happen overnight.

When DS was 7.5 months, I sat him up between my legs as I usually do, and as usual, he fell. I tried again the same day, and he stayed... for over 2 minutes. Then I put him back on his back, left the room for a bit, and when I came back he was sitting up playing with toys! He's been doing it all the time since, and it took him just a couple days to be perfectly balanced.

They're 8 months in 2 days and DD is still not sitting unassisted. She does ok if I put her on my lap, but on the floor she pushes with her legs and goes backwards most of the time...

Mine were 6 months when they sat in a very wobbly fashion for a few seconds, and by 6 1/2 months they could sit better with pillows all around just in case. But mine were full term!! At 4 1/2 months one of mine wasn't pushing up very well on her belly...so give them another 6 weeks and they may be more ready :)

One at almost 8 months and the other exactly at 8 months! If you're worried, then I should have been a mess...some babies just take longer.

Mine just suddenly did it one day at 6.5 months... and they were full term. I'd read that 6.5 is dead-on average for a full term baby and the Babycenter email surprised me back when I received it as well. FWIW, I think their info is off a bit on a number of things and this is one of them. Check out Dr. Spock's site where it says that most babies can sit on their own by 7-9 months and if they aren't doing so by 9, to discuss it with your physician. They're not even talking about preemies in that article!

Also, when the doc asks if they are doing certain things, it's not because they are expecting a "yes" answer to everything! They're just asking a standard set of questions for things that babies sometimes do around that age.

FWIW, my "average" sitters were early walkers and are rather advanced in both gross and fine motor skills so a later start with sitting doesn't necessarily mean anything.
